Fed’s Interest Rate Hikes Are Probably Over, but Officials Are Reluctant to Say So

Updated Dec. 1, 2023 1:43 pm ETFederal Reserve officials are increasingly confident that they don’t need to keep raising interest rates to defeat inflation. But they aren’t ready to declare an end to hikes—let alone to start a discussion about lowering rates. On Friday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell offered the strongest signal yet that officials are likely done raising rates by saying that their policy setting is “well into restrictive territory, meaning that tight monetary policy” is slowing economic activity. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Consumers Pulled Back on Spending, Inflation Eased in October

Updated Nov. 30, 2023 12:09 pm ETAmericans slowed their spending in October and inflation continued cooling as the economy downshifted into fall after a fast-paced summer.Consumer spending rose 0.2% in October, down sharply from a 0.7% rise in September, the Commerce Department said Thursday. The October reading marked the slowest increase since May. The combination of ebbing income growth, high interest rates and prices, dwindling pandemic savings and the resumption of student-loan payments is eroding Americans’ ability to keep boosting their spending as briskly as they did through the summer, economists say.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Inflation’s Cooldown Gives the Fed Leeway

Nov. 30, 2023 11:29 am ETSit down while you’re reading this: Fed policy makers made a dud prediction about how much inflation would cool at the tail end of 2023.The Commerce Department on Thursday reported that its overall index of consumer prices—the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge—was flat in October from September, putting it 3% above its year-earlier level. That was its slimmest year-over-year gain since March 2021. Core prices, which exclude food and energy items in an effort to better track inflation’s underlying trend, rose 0.2% from September. That put them 3.5% above their year-earlier level for the smallest gain since April 2021.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Michele Bullock said Wednesday in a speech to market economists.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
