The Welfare-Industrial Complex Is Booming

Dec. 31, 2023 11:23 am ETDrill into the nation’s 3.7% unemployment rate, and you’ll find a growing welfare-industrial complex beneath the seemingly strong labor market. Government, social assistance and healthcare account for 56% of the 2.8 million net new jobs over the past year, and for nearly all gains in blue states such as New York and Illinois. The tens of thousands of migrants pouring into big cities need to be tended to. So do the hundreds of thousands of drug-addled and mentally ill homeless living on the streets. Progressive government doesn’t do anything on the cheap. America’s welfare state has thus become a proverbial Big Dig, and it keeps getting bigger.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Surge of Migrants Heading North Has Chicago, New York at a ‘Breaking Point’

The mayors of New York, Chicago and Denver said a nonending flow of migrants arriving from the southern border has pushed their cities to the breaking point heading into the New Year, as border crossings swell and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott keeps finding new ways to torment his Democratic rivals.Abbott, a Republican who began sending migrants on buses to other states in spring 2022, doubled down on the strategy in recent weeks. He sent his first planeloads of migrants to Chicago and New York in part to flout regulations on where and when bus operators can drop off the migrants.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Putin and Migrants Ring Out 2023

The last week of the year of world disorder known as 2023 offered a clear reminder of the challenge facing President Biden and Congress when they return to work in January. To wit, the problems at the southern border and Ukraine aren’t about to vanish.Russia resumed its bombing of Ukrainian cities with a vengeance on Friday. The drone and missile barrage was the worst in months with Kyiv counting a total of 158 fired at a range of targets across the country. As usual with Russia, civilians weren’t spared. At least 30 people were killed and 160 wounded, according to the Ukrainian government. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

The Great Blue to Red State Migration Continues

The migrant border mess is benefiting progressive states like New York, California and Illinois in one respect: It’s offsetting some of their population loss from droves of taxpayers fleeing to lower-cost and low-tax states. That’s one lesson from new Census Bureau state population data released this week. The U.S. population increased by 1.6 million between July 2022 and July 2023, with states in the South accounting for about 1.4 million of the growth. Leading the boom were Texas (473,453), Florida (365,205), Georgia (116,077), South Carolina (90,600) and Tennessee (77,512). Driving their growth was migration from other states.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Why a Border Deal Might Not Fix the Border

WASHINGTON—The immigration-policy proposals that Republicans and Democrats have haggled over for weeks have one big catch—they may not do much to stem the flow of migrants at the border.Arrests of migrants surged recently to above 10,000 a day along the Southwest border, overwhelming agents and prompting the unusual move of closing some bridges and ports. President Biden dispatched Secretary of State Antony Blinken and top Homeland Security officials to Mexico to discuss how to stem the flow, while House Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) demanded the White House take executive action to turn back migrants.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. The Texas Immigration Law Gambit

Frustrated by the Biden Administration’s immigration failures, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott this week signed a bill making it a state crime for migrants to cross the southern border illegally. The flood of migrants is a major state problem, but the only effective solution lies in Congress. The Texas law makes it a misdemeanor to cross the border illegally, punishable by up to six months in jail. Foreign migrants who attempt to enter Texas after being deported could be charged with a felony. A federal grant of asylum, lawful presence, or protection under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals would be an “affirmative defense” from prosecution.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
