What The Hell Is Going On With House Republicans?

On Oct. 4, a small group of Republican Party rebels did what no one had done before and removed the speaker of the House from office in a mid-Congress floor vote. These eight members, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), tossed Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) aside and left the House speakerless for two weeks and counting.Subsequent efforts to find a replacement have failed. First, Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) won a closed-door party vote to be the party’s choice for speaker ahead of a floor vote. But he was immediately rejected by the same rebels who overthrew McCarthy, and he withdrew before he hit the floor. Then came Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), a verbal-bomb-throwing, election-denying, hard-line Trumpist conservative who gained the backing of the rebels as well as McCarthy and Sca...

The Unmaking of the Republican Majority

The Republican calamity continues. As I write, the House is still without a speaker more than two weeks after Kevin McCarthy was deposed by Rep. Matt Gaetz’s band of political arsonists. Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan hasn’t yet persuaded, cajoled, enticed or threatened his way to 217 votes. He may not get there. It will be ironic if Mr. Jordan wins: The founder of the House GOP’s Freedom Caucus must then become the unifier in chief. A man who during 16 years in Congress has never passed a bill would have to become a master legislator. A politician who gained power by bullying others would have to learn to persuade and energize them. He would find quickly that making demands in Washington has limits—as does anyone stuck with the speaker’s job.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights ...

House Republicans Search For New Speaker Amid Uncertainty

In their first big meeting after an almost week-long cooling-off period since the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), House Republicans talked a lot about the need to replace him and how to make that process smoother — but found little agreement. The meeting, held a day before speaker candidates are set to make their presentations to the GOP conference to win supporters, was intended more as a free-for-all discussion than a business meeting to decide official party policy.Still, members exiting the meeting in the basement of the U.S. Capitol on Monday night expressed a variety of opinions on how quickly they could select a speaker and who it might be.Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Republicans need to find a speaker by We...

GOP Rep. Wants Kevin McCarthy Reinstalled ASAP As Speaker To Fund Israel In War

Rep. John Duarte (R-Calif.) said Monday that Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s commitment to Israel makes him ideal to return as speaker of the House even if he was just voted out. (Watch the video below.)In an interview on “Fox & Friends” Duarte called for the House to reelect fellow Californian McCarthy when it reconvenes this week so it can approve military aid to Israel as soon as possible. Without an elected speaker, the House would not be able to vote on a funding package, he said.“We have one of our strongest allies in the world under attack, and we are dilly-dallying around with a leadership struggle in the House that should have never occurred,” Duarte said, expressing fear that Israel could run short on artillery.McCarthy said later on Monday he would step in again as speaker if he’s wa...

Trump Reportedly Could Soon Endorse Jim Jordan For Speaker

Former President Donald Trump could soon endorse Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) as the next speaker of the House, according to another Republican congressman.Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) said Thursday that he had a “great conversation” with Trump about the process to replace former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), who was ousted in a shocking turn of fortune this week. McCarthy was voted out of the speakership on Tuesday after eight far-right Republicans — led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (Fla.) — voted to strip him of his gavel, a first such ouster in the chamber’s history.“He is endorsing Jim Jordan, and I believe Congress should listen to the leader of our party,” Nehls wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “I fully support Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House.”The Trump campaign did not immediately re...

Why House GOP Rules Bar Donald Trump From Becoming Speaker

WASHINGTON — Some House Republicans are saying they would like former President Donald Trump to become the next speaker of the House. The problem? Republicans’ own rules forbid someone under criminal indictment for a felony from serving in party leadership.Nevertheless, Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Troy Nehls (R-Texas) and Greg Steube (R-Fla.) have stated that they want Trump to be speaker — and the former president is reportedly considering a visit to the Capitol next week, ahead of an election for the House’s top job.The chamber has been leaderless since Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) triggered a no-confidence vote that ended the speakership of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) after just nine months. So far, Reps. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Steve Scalise (R-La.) have announced bids to suc...
