U.S. Fines Southwest Airlines $140 Million for Holiday Meltdown

The Transportation Department on Monday announced a $140 million fine against Southwest Airlines over a meltdown last winter that disrupted travel for about two million people during the holiday season.Of the $140 million, Southwest Airlines will pay $35 million to the federal government. For the remaining amount, the department is giving the airline credit for providing frequent-flier points as an apology to customers affected by the meltdown, and for agreeing to give out tens of millions of dollars in vouchers to customers affected by future delays and cancellations. The fine is roughly 30 times what had previously been the department’s largest penalty against an airline for consumer protection violations, a $4.5 million settlement with Air Canada in 2021 over customer refunds.“Today’s a...

How much money are you planning to spend on gifts this holiday season?

Although many are unhappy with the current state of our economy, it is predicted that many Americans will ramp up their holiday spending this season.“My wife and I have been doing our Christmas shopping, and it's definitely more than we had budgeted compared to last year,” said Greg Hinojos, who was visiting from Arizona.Despite worries about inflation, Americans will spend an average of $975 this holiday season, according to a poll done by Gallup in November.“Hopefully we can spend less than that but the way prices are I doubt it, it'll probably be more,” said Garcia.Felipe Garcia and his family will be doing a Secret Santa gift exchange to save money.“There's only so much you can do especially with five daughters, that's what we have,” said Garcia. One Oceano resident said he is barely g...

Gatwick bank holiday strike called off after improved pay offers – Business Traveller

Gatwick airport will not be subject to strike disruption this bank holiday weekend, after members of the Unite union called off planned industrial action. Earlier this month it was announced that over 230 employees from ground handling company Red Handling and passenger assistance firm Wilson James would take part in strike action in a dispute over pay. The employees had been due to walk out for four days between Friday 25 and Monday 28 August, potentially affecting 45,000 passengers. But Unite has confirmed that the strike action has been called off “after workers accepted dramatically improved pay offers”. Staff at Red Handling will benefit from a 14 per cent pay increase as well as improved overtime rates and better sick pay, while those at Wilson James have accepted a 16 per cent pay...

Holiday Inn London Sutton unveils refurbishment – Business Traveller

Located off the top of Sutton High Street close to the town’s rail station, the Holiday Inn London Sutton first opened in the early 1990s. I grew up nearby and have frequented the hotel many times for everything from school graduation parties to NCT classes, although I have never actually stayed there, and will aim to review the property next time I am in town. Having enjoyed a near monopoly for decades, the hotel has faced increasing competition in recent years, with the opening of a Premier Inn Premier Inn close to the town’s St Nicholas centre in 2019, followed by the dual-branded ibis London Sutton Point and Aparthotel Adagio London Sutton Point in 2021. My review of the ibis London Sutton Point from late last year can be seen at: Hotel review: Ibis London Sutton Point Commenting on...
