Israeli Military Reveals Tunnel It Says Hamas Built for Large-Scale Attack

Dec. 17, 2023 10:47 am ETGAZA—A quarter of a mile from a civilian border crossing between Israel and northern Gaza lies what Israel’s military says is the largest tunnel discovered in the enclave. It is large enough that large vehicles can drive through it, and yet, until recently, Israel didn’t know the tunnel reached right up to its border.Israeli troops uncovered the tunnel exit buried under a sand dune a few weeks ago. Israeli officials believe that the tunnel, up to 50 meters deep at points, and 2½ miles long, took years and millions of dollars to build and was meant to facilitate a large-scale attack on Israel.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Atomic Power Is In Again—and China Has the Edge

SINGAPORE—China became the first country to put the latest evolution in civilian nuclear technology into use, placing it at the cutting edge of atomic power just as climate change is bringing nuclear plants back into vogue. With soaring global temperatures and concerns about climate change casting a renewed spotlight on nuclear as a low-carbon power source, China said Wednesday that the first-ever fourth-generation nuclear power plant began commercial operation in the eastern province of Shandong following seven days of continuous operation. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Natural-Gas Pipelines Are Old. Will Regulators Let Utilities Invest in Them?

Utilities across the country are trying to boost spending to maintain aging natural-gas pipelines. Regulators in some Democratic states seeking to limit gas use are saying not so fast.Companies including PG&E, Consolidated Edison and Public Service Enterprise Group have proposed investing billions of dollars to bolster their pipeline networks, which will remain in use for years even as more customers use electricity to cook and heat their homes. They say such spending is necessary in part to maintain safety and reliability as they work to shrink their gas systems over time. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. The Green Electric Power Grid Isn’t Coming

Updated Oct. 19, 2023 8:12 pm ETThe International Energy Agency said this week that 49.7 million miles of transmission lines—enough to wrap around the planet 2,000 times—will have to be built or replaced by 2040 to achieve the climate lobby’s net-zero emissions goal. This amounts to a plan for everyone to buy more metals from coal-fired plants in China.Grid investment, the IEA report argues, is needed to carry additional renewable energy “as the world deploys more electric vehicles, installs more electric heating and cooling systems, and scales up hydrogen production using electrolysis.” By its estimate, the world needs to spend $600 billion annually on grid upgrades by 2030.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
