What Will the Economy Do for an Encore?

Oct. 26, 2023 11:09 am ETA lot of investors are familiar with Stein’s law, named after the late economist Herbert Stein: “If something cannot go on forever, it will stop.”Which brings us to Thursday’s gross-domestic-product report. The Commerce Department reported that the U.S. economy grew at an inflation-adjusted 4.9% annual rate, the biggest gain since the fourth quarter of 2021, and far stronger than the less-than-2% rate that Federal Reserve policy makers think it needs to settle in at to avoid overheating.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Jeep Maker Stellantis Bets on a Chinese EV Startup, but Is It the Right One?

Oct. 26, 2023 11:41 am ETBuying into a Chinese automaker sounds like a great answer to the challenge of making cheaper electric vehicles. If only it were easier to pick winners.Chrysler owner Stellantis said Thursday that it was spending the equivalent of about $1.6 billion to buy a roughly 20% stake in Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology. It will get two board seats and become Leapmotor’s exclusive export partner via a Europe-based joint venture in which Stellantis will own 51%.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Spotify Hit All the Right Notes

Oct. 24, 2023 12:10 pm ETSpotify’s position as a middleman doesn’t always win it a lot of fans. But as the music streamer’s latest results show, that position isn’t as precarious as it seems. Spotify said Tuesday morning that it added six million new paying subscribers during the third quarter, which was well over the four million the company had forecast three months ago. It projected adding nine million new paying subscribers in the fourth quarter, topping the eight million analysts had been projecting. The company also predicted that it would end the year with more than 600 million monthly active users—a mix of paying subscribers and those listening to the service’s free, ad-supported tier. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. What if Wall Street Doesn’t Bounce Back?

Bankers tend to turn into gardeners when talking about the continuing dearth of mergers and other investment-banking deals. They mention “green shoots,” in the form of an acquisition here, or an initial public offering there, as hopeful signs of regrowth. But this analogy might be too delicate for today’s world. Between the low-growth economic outlook, surging Treasury yields and wars in Israel and Ukraine, the risk isn’t just that the soil is a bit dry. It is that the ground is ripped up and parched, turning what is sometimes talked about as a temporary lull into one lasting for years.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. P&G Washes Away Consumer Blues Everywhere but China

Oct. 18, 2023 11:29 am ETProcter & Gamble sees a recovering consumer everywhere but in one market, which just so happens to be the world’s second-largest economy. That is encouraging news for the company itself, but an unsettling message more broadly about the state of China. The maker of Tide detergent and Gillette razors on Wednesday said its organic sales, which strip out the impacts of currency movements and mergers, rose 7% from a year earlier in the three months through September. As has been the case in prior quarters, this was entirely thanks to price increases, as underlying volumes fell 1%. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
