Gene Editing Will Change Medicine—and Maybe Health Investing Too

It usually takes time for scientific discoveries in the lab to make their way to the market. The groundbreaking gene-editing technology known as Crispr, which acts like a molecular pair of scissors that can be used to cut and modify a DNA sequence, has moved rather quickly from the pages of scientific journals to the medical setting. Earlier this month, about three years after Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for describing how bacteria’s immune system could be used as a tool to edit genes, regulators in the U.K. approved the first Crispr-based treatment for sickle cell disease and beta-thalassemia patients. The treatment, from Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Crispr Therapeutics, could be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration early next mo...

Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) and Sen. Mike Braun (R., Ind.) sent a letter on Wednesday to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General requesting an investigation into the high drug prices and any role played by health insurers’ shared ownership with the pharmacies that often fill the prescriptions.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Sam Bankman-Fried Faces Lengthy Sentence—And Long Odds on Appeal

Disgraced crypto star Sam Bankman-Fried is staring down a lengthy prison sentence after being convicted of fraud in the collapse of FTX, and he faces long odds of making any inroads on appeal.A federal jury in New York wasted little time Thursday in convicting the 31-year-old FTX founder of all seven counts he faced, a verdict issued just hours after deliberations began. The conviction, after a monthlong trial, capped the stunning downfall of the former billionaire. Venture capital and unfettered enthusiasm in the crypto markets helped fuel his swift ascent. Jurors agreed with prosecutors that theft and lies by Bankman-Fried fueled FTX’s demise.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Sam Bankman-Fried to Take the Stand in Fraud Trial

Updated Oct. 25, 2023 11:32 am ETFTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried will testify at his criminal trial, his defense team said Wednesday, in what many legal observers see as a Hail Mary attempt to persuade jurors that he never intended to defraud the crypto exchange’s customers out of billions of dollars.  “We are going to put on potentially three witnesses, then our client is also going to be testifying,” lawyer Mark Cohen told the New York federal judge presiding over the case during a virtual hearing. Bankman-Fried will likely testify over Thursday and Friday, Cohen said. Federal prosecutors said they would rest their case Thursday morning.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Sam Bankman-Fried Took Risks at FTX. Will He Bet on His Own Testimony?

FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, known for his appetite for risky bets, is mulling perhaps his biggest gamble yet: testifying in his own defense. The onetime crypto star, on trial in New York on allegations of fraud, money laundering and other offenses, has spent nearly three weeks watching some of his former close friends and colleagues take the stand and offer what appeared to be damning testimony. Bankman-Fried, they told jurors, knowingly directed and committed an array of criminal acts that led to the collapse of the FTX crypto exchange and the loss of billions of dollars in customer funds.  Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Ozempic Boom Is an Opportunity for Health Insurers

You would think a new class of high-price weight loss drugs taken by millions of Americans would be a problem for health insurers. After all, they ultimately foot the bill. But it is more complicated than that: Some insurance giants actually stand to profit from the Ozempic craze. The industry has been calling out the costs of GLP-1 drugs, which are used for both diabetes and obesity. But federally supported Medicare and Medicaid still don’t cover the drugs for obesity, and much of the commercial market is self-insured. In other words, even though your insurance card says “Aetna” or “UnitedHealthcare,” those companies in some cases only act as administrators. That means employers are the ones bearing the risk of runaway costs.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserve...
