Harvard Is Big Business at Its Worst

Dec. 17, 2023 11:38 am ETMost Americans probably heard of the Harvard Corp. for the first time last week, when it issued a supercilious statement affirming its support for Harvard President Claudine Gay. The corporation, Harvard’s governing body, wrote that Ms. Gay “is the right leader to help our community heal and to address the very serious societal issues we are facing.”The statement was effectively a middle finger to alumni such as hedge-fund titan Bill Ackman, who had demanded Ms. Gay be canned after she equivocated before Congress over whether calling for the genocide of Jews violated Harvard’s rules against bullying. The corporation wished to convey it wouldn’t bow to outside pressure.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cde...

America Gets a Harvard Education

The Harvard Corporation lined up behind university president Claudine Gay on Tuesday after calls to fire her for her handling of antisemitism on campus and evidence of plagiarism in her academic work. The decision confirms the school’s pattern of putting identity politics above liberal values and its selective support for free speech on campus. In a public letter to the university community, the Harvard fellows who chose President Gay and supervise the university write that they have “confidence” that she is the “right leader to help our community heal and to address the very serious societal issues we are facing.”Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. The Anguished Fallout from a Pro-Palestinian Letter at Harvard

Early on Saturday, October 7th, as Harvard’s campus awoke to news of the Hamas attack on Israel, a Palestinian American student whom I’ll call Yasmeen rushed to her friend’s apartment, still in pajamas, to compose “an emergency statement” on behalf of Palestinian allies on campus. Yasmeen and her friend, who asked to be called Nadia, opened a blank Google document and shared the link in an existing group chat with leaders from about a dozen student organizations. Together, the group began composing a draft. They highlighted lines, added statistics, left comments. They debated how much historical detail to provide about the Palestinian people and the conditions in the Gaza Strip. “It was originally so long,” Yasmeen recalled. “But then we were, like, ‘Cut the stats. Cut the numbers. It has...

Nobel Prize in economics goes to Harvard professor Claudia Goldin for research on workplace gender gap

The Nobel economics prize was awarded Monday to Harvard University professor Claudia Goldin for research that has advanced the understanding of the gender gap in the labor market. The announcement went a tiny step to closing the Nobel committee's own gender gap: Goldin is just the third woman to win the prize out of 93 economics laureates. She has studied 200 years of women's participation in the workplace, showing that despite continued economic growth, women's pay did not continuously catch up to men's and a divide still exists despite women gaining higher levels of education than men. "Understanding women's role in the labor market is important for society. Thanks to Claudia Goldin's groundbreaking research, we now know much more about the underlying ...
