Gap Is Righting the Ship With Old Navy

Is Gap cool again?Maybe not yet, but it is looking more on trend than it has in a long time. The company, which also owns Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta, on Thursday reported that comparable sales fell 2% in its quarter ended Oct. 28. That was much better than the 7.4% decline that Wall Street analysts polled by Visible Alpha had expected. Net income of $218 million was more than three times the number analysts had penciled in. Gap’s shares jumped 15% in after-hours trading following the company’s earnings call on Thursday.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

All Stores Want for Christmas Is the Right Amount of Stuff

Retailers’ holiday inventory planning has been fraught with unpleasant supply-chain surprises for two straight years. This year’s gift: Things are back to normal. In 2021, shipping delays meant retailers didn’t have enough stuff on their shelves to meet demand. And last year, scarred by those experiences, shops made the mistake of over-ordering merchandise—sending their shelves overflowing and forcing them to sell goods at margin-eroding discounts. A basket of retailers in the S&P 500 saw operating margins fall to 4.4% in the fourth quarter of 2022, down from 5.6% a year earlier.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. U.S. Trade Loophole Fuels Rise of China’s New E-Commerce Firms

Updated Oct. 26, 2023 2:43 pm ETA law that allows low-price packages to enter the U.S. duty-free and with little customs scrutiny has enabled the breakneck growth of two e-commerce companies with roots in China: Shein and Temu.  Packages valued under $800 can enter the U.S. under simplified procedures known as the de minimis exemption. Lawmakers and some U.S. businesses say it is a loophole that the Chinese companies are using at a huge scale, allowing shipments of products that are unsafe or made with forced labor, while avoiding taxes.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. 7 Best Trackers (2023): GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Cellular

“Systems!” My friends and Marie Kondo’s internet shout. “All you need is a system. As long as you always put your things down in the same place, you’ll never lose anything again,” they say, as I stagger in the door carrying children’s backpacks, a bag of dirty laundry, my waist pack, and a sack of dog food.Like Elizabeth Bishop, I have developed losing into a fine art. I hid my Kindle from the 5-year-old, and now I can’t find it. My husband borrowed my wallet to grab the car insurance card; while I was looking for that, the dog got out of the yard. You may feel ambivalent about possibly stalking your friends or loved ones (please resist the urge to sew a tracker into your shady boyfriend’s coat), but without Bluetooth and GPS trackers, I would barely be able to function. I’ve listed my pr...
