Tech’s New Normal: Microcuts Over Growth at All Costs

The tech industry has largely recovered from the downturn, but Silicon Valley learned a long-lasting lesson: how to do more with less. Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta Platforms have been cutting dozens or a few hundred employees at a time as executives keep tight controls on costs, even as their businesses and stock prices have rebounded sharply. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. One Supreme Court Case Could Mess Up Chunks of the Tax Code

WASHINGTON—A case that could punch holes in the federal tax code heads to the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The court will hear arguments in Moore v. U.S., which challenges a piece of the 2017 tax law that imposed a one-time levy on profits that companies had accumulated outside the U.S. But its implications could reach much further, providing the justices an opportunity to define what Congress can tax under the Constitution—and what it can’t. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Medical AI Tools Can Make Dangerous Mistakes. Can the Government Help Prevent Them?

Doctors have started using artificial intelligence in novel ways to communicate with patients and help make diagnoses. Now the government is wrestling with how to ensure the tools do no harm.Federal regulators are proposing a new labeling system for AI healthcare apps designed to make it easier for clinicians to spot the pitfalls and shortcomings of these tools. The Biden administration has proposed that these apps come with a “nutrition label” that discloses how the app was trained, how it performs, how it should be used and how it shouldn’t. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Nvidia’s AI Boom Almost Blows Past Politics

Nvidia rules the artificial intelligence world, but that world is getting a little smaller—and more crowded. The chip maker now synonymous with AI reported another quarter of blowout sales and earnings growth late Tuesday. Revenue more than tripled to $18.1 billion thanks mostly to soaring sales at the company’s data center segment, which is now four times as large as its other businesses combined. Nvidia’s strong lead in the chips necessary to power generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT is also evident in its surging bottom line. Adjusted operating margins hit a record high of 64% in the fiscal third quarter ended October, far above the company’s average of 38% for the same quarter over the past five years. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
