Unlike the Giants, Jets giving fans hope for next season

It is always football season around here, the same way it’s always baseball season. And it feels that way more than ever these days, even in the spring, because of free agency and the upcoming draft. So, you better believe the Giants and Jets are very much in the conversation lately, one that can start here as well as anywhere else, whether the Giants like it or not: They’re no better than the Jets now. And they might turn out to be worse if a quarterback older than the East River and coming off a torn Achilles — Mr. Rodgers himself, now playing in our neighborhood — manages to stay healthy for the 2024-25 NFL season. Stay with the Giants for now. You know how much went wrong for them last season, starting with their opening drive of the season against the Cowboys, one that ended with a b...

Giants WR Parris Campbell ‘shocked’ and ‘hurt’ by 1st healthy scratch

Giants wide receiver Parris Campbell was crushed by being made a healthy scratch on Monday night for the first time in his career. “Yeah, I definitely was shocked,” Campbell told the Daily News on Wednesday. “Shoot, I was more so just hurt, more than anything… hurt that I know what I put into it each and every week. And to be inactive for the first time in my career was definitely hurtful, was definitely shocking. A lot of different emotions [are] going on, for sure.” Campbell said he was at least “grateful” that the Giants’ brass gave him the bad news on Sunday, more than 24 hours before their win over the Packers, rather than letting him find out on gameday. Not that it made him feel any better about the end result. “I was grateful for that, because they respected me enough to tell me e...

Tommy DeVito leads Giants to last-second win over Packers

Saquon Barkley fumbled the game away, but Tommy DeVito won it back. A fourth-quarter Barkley fumble gave the Green Bay Packers a late go-ahead touchdown Monday night at MetLife Stadium. But DeVito, the undrafted rookie, captained the Giants’ two-minute drill to set up a 37-yard Randy Bullock field goal to beat the Packers, 24-22. A 32-yard pass to Wan’Dale Robinson got the Giants into field goal range. Robinson led the team with six catches for 79 yards. Barkley had two touchdown runs. The Giants defense and special teams forced three turnovers. And DeVito had 158 passing yards, 71 rushing yards and a touchdown pass. The Giants (5-8) have won three straight with DeVito at quarterback. This was a big one with Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll taking the risk of naming DeVito the starter over a h...

Saquon Barkley limps forward for Giants with no guarantee of return

Saquon Barkley’s right ankle can only take so much. That’s the latest reason why this horrific Giants season might get worse starting with Sunday’s visit to the Washington Commanders. Barkley didn’t play the final 10 minutes of last week’s 49-17 blowout loss at Dallas. A Cowboys defender landed on his ankle in the third quarter. Then Barkley planted his foot on a screen pass in the fourth quarter, immediately collapsed to the turf and left the game. He claimed Thursday that the re-injury was “nothing that set [me] back.” But he’s been limited at practice all week, and it’s hard to imagine he will be able to get through Sunday’s game at FedEx Field at anything close to full strength. The cruel reality, of course, is that the Giants (2-8) have no true plan to move the ball consistently outs...

Dak Prescott, Cowboys take aim at Giants

THE 10 BEST GAMES TO BET GIANTS at COWBOYS 4:25 p.m., Cowboys by 15 ½, 38 ½ HANK’S HONEYS: It’s a lot of points to give in an NFL game but then again, the Giants haven’t been looking much like an NFL team. With Tommy DeVito at the helm of a moribund offense, the Cowboys may not even need to break 30 to get it done against a worn-down Giants D and they have won each of their home games by at least 20. They certainly can’t look past the Giants after suffering a tough divisional loss to the Eagles. If you haven’t used the Cowboys in your survival pool, take the freebie as Dak Prescott rolls to his 11th straight win over the Jints. IF I WERE A BETTING MAN: Cowboys and the under. JETS at RAIDERS 8:20 p.m., Jets by 2 ½, 35 ½ HANK’S HONEYS: The Raiders’ defense rallied around IHC Antonio Pierce ...

Giants hold on for win over Commanders to snap four-game skid

Sunday was a day of refreshing firsts for the Giants. Darren Waller’s first touchdown as a Giant. Rookie Deonte Banks’ first NFL interception. Dexter Lawrence’s first two sacks of the year. The offense’s first touchdown in 220 game minutes, in head coach Brian Daboll’s first week running the offensive meetings. Tyrod Taylor’s second straight game looking at times like a first-string quarterback on an NFL depth chart. Their first win in five weeks, a desperately-needed 14-7 victory over their annual get-right opponent, the Washington Commanders. Not that it came easily. Not that this means everything is right with the team. But GM Joe Schoen and Daboll had to have this game to keep up the appearance of showing progress in some areas at some point this season. And their team showed some...
