George Santos’ expulsion from Congress earlier this month.Former Rep. Pete King, a Long Island Republican, confirmed the selection to Newsday.“Mazi is the choice,” King told Newsday. “She’s going to be a great candidate. Congress Expels George Santos. Who’s Next?

George Santos, assuming that’s his real name, is a classic type, and in another era he’d be selling miracle elixirs out of a horse-drawn wagon or perhaps founding a religion based on his divine revelations. Instead he went to Congress. On Friday the House expelled the indicted New Yorker, but however bad Mr. Santos’s conduct, it’s a worrying precedent for a polarized age.Mr. Santos faces 23 federal charges, including fraud and identity theft. Yet he has pleaded not guilty, and even politicians get a presumption of innocence. Before Friday’s expulsion, which passed 311-114, only five people in history had been booted by the House. Three were removed in 1861 for serving the Confederacy. The other two, in 1980 and 2002, were convicted of serious crimes.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company...

The Distrustful Generation – WSJ

Editor’s note: In this Future View, students discuss declining trust in American governmental and political institutions. Next week we’ll ask, “Nearly half of Americans 18 to 29 favor socialism. Why does this generation seem so divided from older generations? Has social media played a large role? Academic institutions? Or is Gen Z less divided from older generations than we think?” Students should click here to submit opinions of fewer than 250 words before Dec. 5. The best responses will be published that night.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

George Santos Says House Expulsion Will Be ‘Badge Of Honor’ In 3-Hour Rant

Rep. George Santos, the New York Republican whose various deceptions have landed him in hot water with colleagues and the Justice Department, remained defiant during a three-hour-long appearance on a live audio program Friday.“You want to expel me? I’ll wear it like a badge of honor,” he declared, adding: “I’ll be the only one expelled because people did not like me.”Santos spoke with conservative host Monica Matthews on X Spaces, formerly known as Twitter Spaces, around two weeks after a damning House ethics report found that he spent thousands of campaign dollars on Botox and other luxuries for himself. “I will defend myself to the end of time,” Santos said.Even before he took the oath of office in January, Santos has been plagued by allegations ranging from the silly to serious. He pre...

‘Weekend Update’: Colin Jost Has A Harsh Out-Of-This-World Goodbye For Rupert Murdoch

″[He’s] passing the position on to his eldest son, Darth Murdoch,” quipped Jost as he used “Star Wars” to mock Lachlan Murdoch, who is taking the reins from his father.Co-host Michael Che separately brought up the House Ethics Committee’s recent report on Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) that described the Republican using campaign funds to pay for personal care and services including Hermès products, cosmetic procedures and OnlyFans’ subscriptions. The GOP chairman of the committee, Rep. Michael Guest (R-Miss.), has since filed a resolution to expel Santos from Congress.Che, who joked over a picture of Santos using the phone that it depicted him “asking your grandma for her social security number,” made a swipe at the congressman over his alleged purchases.“Santos would’ve denied the allegatio...

Hermès, Botox and an Atlantic City trip: How Rep. George Santos allegedly spent some of his campaign funds

Washington — A bruising report from the House Ethics Committee on its investigation into GOP Rep. George Santos of New York detailed what congressional investigators said was "substantial evidence" that the embattled congressman tapped into campaign funds to cover his own personal expenses. The purchases — at luxury retailers, spas, resorts and more — made by Santos while mounting bids for Congress in 2020 and 2022, the first of which was unsuccessful, were uncovered during the course of a review conducted by a four-member investigative subcommittee of the ethics panel into allegations of wrongdoing by the freshman congressman. The lawmakers' findings were made public by the Ethics Committee on Thursday, prompting swift condemnation of Santos from Republicans and Democrats alike, and addin...
