The Low-Wage Pay Surge Is Over, Threatening the Consumer Boom

Low-wage workers were the labor market’s surprise winners of the past few years. As employers clamored to hire from a limited pool of workers, Americans in lower-paying industries gained leverage to obtain some of the largest pay raises and perks. Government relief during the pandemic padded those workers’ finances. Now, that leverage is weakening. More workers are seeking jobs, and the economy is feeling the impact of the Federal Reserve’s campaign to combat inflation. That has resulted in slower wage growth overall, but particularly at the lower end of the pay scale. Pandemic-era savings cushions are growing smaller. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Your Pilot Has a New Job—and a Bigger Plane to Fly

Listen to article(2 minutes)Airlines’ hiring binge has suddenly thrust many pilots behind the controls of different, bigger planes than they are used to flying. That rapid advancement to new cockpit seats is fueling anxieties over whether pilots’ newness to certain aircraft could lead to more minor mishaps that go unnoticed by the flying public—or more serious incidents and accidents.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. The Workers Who Make Your Clothes Want Higher Pay. Who Should Pony Up?

DHAKA, Bangladesh—The armies of people who make clothes for Western brands—some of the lowest-paid factory workers in the world—are protesting for better wages, a fresh sign that the era of ultracheap labor, and ultracheap clothes, on which many companies rely is increasingly under strain.Garment workers in Bangladesh make as little as $3 a day, or about $75 a month. In recent days, tens of thousands have refused to work, calling for the minimum wage to be raised to nearly three times that amount. Demonstrations have spiraled, with factories set ablaze and machines smashed. Some three hundred factories were forced to stop operations.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Labor Shortages, Remote Work Fuel Job Gains for Workers With Disabilities

Samantha Sauer said she landed her first full-time job at age 32, after a decade of being unable to find such work because of a medical condition requiring regular, time-consuming medical treatments.  Then in 2022, she got a full-time remote job answering telephone calls from people seeking help from Patients Rising, a private group that provides resources and advocacy for people living with chronic illnesses. The position allows her to work “without having to sacrifice my health for my job or my job for my health,” said Sauer, who lives in New York.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Government Jobs Are Doing Fine

President Biden took his usual victory lap after the latest jobs report on Friday, boasting that he’s “growing the economy from the middle out.” The catch is that he means it too literally, as government jobs drove a third of the gains. The bigger news was the labor market slowdown in the private economy. The U.S. added 150,000 jobs in October, according to the monthly Labor report. That’s one of the smallest monthly gains since the pandemic recovery took off in 2021, second only to June of this year. Friday’s report also revised down combined job gains in August and September by 101,000. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8
