The California Budget Bust Arrives

Much like California’s climate cycle of storms and drought, the state’s progressive tax code yields revenue booms and busts. Now the bust is coming. After a $100 billion budget surplus two years ago, the Golden State is now staring at a $68 billion shortfall because the gusher of tax revenue from soaking the rich has dried up.The state Legislative Analyst’s Office projected on Thursday a $68 billion budget gap through the next fiscal year and $155 billion in cumulative deficits over the next four years. For comparison, Florida’s entire general fund budget was $46.1 billion this year.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

California Faces Record $68 Billion Budget Deficit

California is facing a $68 billion budget deficit next fiscal year—its largest ever—because of plunging revenues including a steep drop in personal income tax collections.According to estimates released by the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office Thursday, projected state revenues through the 2024-2025 fiscal year are $58 billion lower than assumed in the $310 billion state budget passed by the Democratic-controlled legislature and signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, also a Democrat, in June. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Newsom’s California Tax Whopper – WSJ

Thursday night’s debate on Fox News between Gavin Newsom and Ron DeSantis was instructive on many levels. While the Florida Governor stressed his superior record on crime, schools and the economy, Mr. Newsom focused on progressive cultural themes. But one of Mr. Newsom’s economic howlers shouldn’t pass without contradiction. The Governor proudly defended his state’s progressive income tax that imposes a top rate of 13.3% on taxpayers making more than $1 million—the second highest in the country after New York City. But he also asserted that Florida “taxes low-income workers more than we tax millionaires and billionaires in the state of California.”Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. DeSantis vs. Newsom: a Scorecard

Gavin Newsom and Ron DeSantis are set to square off Thursday evening in a Fox News debate, and it should be instructive. Besides offering voters a look of the alternatives to Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the showdown between the California and Florida governors could provide a revealing policy contrast.Sacramento has rushed to the left in recent decades while Tallahassee has moved to the right. Since winning election in 2018, Messrs. Newsom and DeSantis have advanced sharply different policies on Covid lockdowns, taxes, school choice and climate regulation, among other things. In case you’ll be keeping track at home, here is a scorecard of policy results.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

DeSantis vs. Newsom on Violent Crime

California Gov. Gavin Newsom isn’t running for president in 2024, at least not yet, but he has agreed to a televised Fox News debate next month with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. One worthy topic will be their respective economic records, but they should also spend some time on public safety. The Federal Bureau of Investigation this week released national statistics on 2022, and the headline was that violent crime fell 1.7%, dipping back to the same level as before the pandemic. But it’s a big country, and those averages don’t tell the whole story. In California violent crime is still up 13% since 2019. In Florida it’s down 31.5%. The rate of violent crime in Mr. Newsom’s state last year, 499.5 per 100,000 people, was nearly double that in Mr. DeSantis’s domain, 258.9 per 100,000.Copyright ©2...

California Gov. Newsom Vetoes Bill To Decriminalize Psychedelic Mushrooms

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has vetoed a bill aimed at decriminalizing the possession and personal use of several hallucinogens, including psychedelic mushrooms. The legislation vetoed Saturday would have allowed those 21 and older to possess psilocybin, the hallucinogenic component in what’s known as psychedelic mushrooms. It also would have covered dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and mescaline. The bill would not have legalized the sale of the substances and would have barred any possession of the substances on school grounds. Instead, it would have ensured people are neither arrested nor prosecuted for possessing limited amounts of plant-based hallucinogens.Newsom, a Democrat who championed legalizing cannabis in 2016, said in a statement Saturday that more needs to b...
