Singapore Airlines to launch London Gatwick service – Business Traveller

Singapore Airlines (SIA) will launch its inaugural nonstop flights between its Singapore hub and London’s Gatwick airport in June 2024, operating the five-times a week service with the long-haul variant of its Airbus A350-900 aircraft. Together with its current four-times daily services to London’s Heathrow airport, this will bring the total number of flights to the United Kingdom’s (UK) capital to 33 weekly services from today’s 28 weekly services. Star Alliance member SIA also operates five-times weekly services to Manchester airport. Revamped Gatwick airport station to open on 21 November – Business Traveller

Gatwick airport will unveil its upgraded station facilities later this month. The £250 million project has included the creation of a second concourse and airport entrance, with eight new escalators, five new lifts, four new stairways and widened platforms. The existing station concourse has also been expanded, with new customer information systems, more ticket gates, and a dedicated passenger assistance point. When the upgraded facilities open on Tuesday 21 November, the new concourse will act as the entrance for people accessing the airport terminal, with the existing concourse being used for those exiting. Gatwick airport has extended its temporary cap on daily flight numbers until the middle of October, as it continues to work through issues caused by air traffic control staff absences. On 25 September the airport imposed a limit of 800 daily departing and arriving flights, which had originally been due to last until Sunday 1 October. At the time Gatwick said the decision had been made alongside NATS, which operates the airport’s air traffic control tower, with 30 per cent of tower staff “currently unavailable for a variety of medical reasons including Covid”. Gatwick airport will not be subject to strike disruption this bank holiday weekend, after members of the Unite union called off planned industrial action. Earlier this month it was announced that over 230 employees from ground handling company Red Handling and passenger assistance firm Wilson James would take part in strike action in a dispute over pay. The employees had been due to walk out for four days between Friday 25 and Monday 28 August, potentially affecting 45,000 passengers. New strikes at Gatwick to affect 45,000 passengers – Business Traveller

Gatwick airport is set to be disrupted by eight days of strike action this month due to a dispute over pay. The Unite union confirmed that the strike will involve over 230 employees from Red Handling, a ground handling company, and Wilson James, which operates the passenger assistance contract at the airport. Red Handling is responsible for ground handling for airlines including Norse Atlantic, Delta Air Lines, TAP Air Portugal and Saudi.
