PM Modi opens the meeting with ‘Bharat’ nameplate

Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the 18th G20 Leaders' Summit on Saturday with his opening remarks. During his address, the country's nameplate read "Bharat" instead of the traditional "India". The debate around the country's name erupted on social media earlier this week following the G20 Summit invitations going out in the name of the "President of Bharat" and not as the "President of India". The dinner invitation from President Droupadi Murmu to foreign leaders attending the G20 summit this weekend comes in the name of "President of Bharat". It triggered a war of words on social media, with BJP leaders clashing with the Opposition and several celebrities and sports personalities also wading into the row. According to media reports, the Centre may i...

Global Biofuels Alliance may be a key G20 takeaway under India’s presidency

NEW DELHI: Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA) to speed up development of a multi-system low-carbon energy pathway could be one of the key takeaways from the weekend summit of G20 leaders under India’s presidentship of the grouping. It will reinforce India’s position in the fight against climate change and mark a second India-led idea of a multilateral platform for faster transition coming to fruition. The International Solar Alliance, jointly launched in 2015 by prime minister Naredra Modi and his French counterpart Francois Hollande at the Paris COP21 was the first such idea that had catapulted India at the centre stage of climate action. On Wednesday, the Cabinet put its stamp on the GBA, comforted by the fact that 19 countries had agreed to stand with India as initiating members of GBA at th...

India eyes bigger share of lab-grown diamond mkt

JAIPUR: India is taking a shot at the global diamond trade with its lab-grown variety, whose exports were estimated at around $1.5 billion in 2022-23. Fuelling its expectations is US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recognising it as 'cultured', instead of artificial or synthetic. On the eve of the G20 ministerial meeting here, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said lab-grown diamonds are made through natural elements and the recognition by US FTC will further enhance their acceptance globally and benefit Indian entities. "It is a huge thumbs up for the Indian industry." The government had sought to provide an impetus to lab-grown diamonds in this year's budget and provided for a grant of Rs 242 crore to IIT-Madras to establish an India Centre for Lab-Grown Diamond. These diamonds...

G20 energy transition meeting concludes with no joint communique

The Energy Transition ministerial under India's G20 Presidency concluded with no joint communique. In addition to other significant tracks such as finance and agriculture, now energy transition has also failed to find a clear consensus on all issues raised by the G20 nations. One of the major sticking points was the language around the Russia-Ukraine war. This paper reported Russia wanted the G20 communique to mention a paragraph on the destruction of its gas pipelines that have jeopardised its energy security. Union Minister for Power and Renewable Energy R K Singh, however, said it was one of the more successful conferences in G20. “We had complete agreement on 22 out of 29 paragraphs, 7 paragraphs constitute the Chair summary,” he said. A chair summary as th...

World Bank Prez Ajay Banga to travel to India next wk to attend G20 meet

World Bank President Ajay Banga will travel to India next week, his first visit to the country after taking over the helm of the global lender, to attend the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting in Ahmedabad. Indian-American Banga, 63, took over as the President of the World Bank in June, making him the first person of colour to head either of the two global financial institutions, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The Executive Directors of the World Bank selected Banga as the 14th President of the World Bank in May for a five-year term after being nominated by US President Joe Biden for the post.
