Sustainable Aviation Fuel production to triple in 2024 – Business Traveller

The International Air Transport Association has released its latest figures for expected production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in 2024. Around 1.875 billion litres of SAF are expected to be produced next year, triple the 600 million litres produced in 2023, which in turn was double the 300 million litres produced in 2022. But IATA stressed that the 2024 figures equate to just 0.53 per cent of the aviation industry’s fuel needs, and warned that SAF output is expected to account for just 6 per cent of all renewable fuels produced next year, with 94 per cent going to other sectors. IATA said that “demand is not the issue”, adding that “Every drop of SAF produced has been bought and used”. “At least 43 airlines have already committed to use some 16.25 billion litres of SAF in 2030, w...

Singapore Airlines targets 5 per cent sustainable fuel by 2030 – Business Traveller

Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Scoot, the two airlines within the SIA Group portfolio of carriers, have announced their target of replacing 5 per cent of their total fuel requirements with sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) by 2030. Sustainable fuels are a key decarbonisation lever for the airline industry, given their potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 80 per cent on a life-cycle basis compared to conventional jet fuel. This makes them critical to SIA group’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. Discussions with fuel suppliers on opportunities to purchase sustainable aviation fuels are ongoing, SIA says. Over the last few years, the group has been working closely with partners, both in Singapore and around the world, to better understand the operational and com...

Lufthansa partners with Airbus and Munich airport for Power-To-Liquid fuel research – Business Traveller

Lufthansa has signed a Letter of Intent with organisations including Airbus and Munich airport for “a broad-based research collaboration on Power-to-Liquid (PtL) aviation fuels”. The agreement – which also involves MTU Aero Engines and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) – is intended to accelerate the technology selection, market introduction and industrial scaling of PtL aviation fuels in Germany. PtL is considered by some to be the next generation of Sustainable Aviation Fuels, using regeneratively generated electricity, water and CO2 from the atmosphere to create a syngas from which sustainable aviation fuel can be produced. Lufthansa said that the collaboration would also include the testing of pure PtL (ie: without the addition of fossil kerosene) in order to gain knowledge for the a...

The government also cut windfall tax on aviation turbine fuel to 1 rupee per litre from 3.50 rupees per litre and reduced windfall tax on diesel to 4 rupees per litre from 5 rupees per litre.Last month, on Sept 29, government had increased windfall tax on petroleum crude, while reduced it on aviation turbine fuel and diesel. The windfall tax on petroleum crude was raised to 12,100 rupees ($145.65) per ton from 10,000 rupees ($120.37). While, the levy on aviation turbine fuel had been reduced t...
