How could climate change affect your money?

Weather and climate disasters have cost Americans billions over the past few years — and it’s only expected to get worse.Morrison1977/Getty Images/iStockphotoA new report from the U.S. Department of the Treasury found that alongside risks to health and the physical environment, climate change imposes "substantial financial costs" on communities across the U.S. The total cost of weather and climate disasters from 2018 to 2022 exceeded $617 billion, with a price tag of more than $176 billion in 2022 alone. While 13% of Americans reported economic hardship from natural disasters and severe weather (including flooding, hurricanes, wildfires, and extreme temperatures), climate change impacts are only expected to worsen, putting more communities and households at risk of financial strain. Here ...

IBM, Microsoft and Big Tech Antitrust Folly

The continuing trial of Google, along with lawsuits against Amazon and Meta, have brought antitrust back into the public eye. These suits recall the 1969 case against IBM and the 1998 case against Microsoft, the great antitrust battles of the latter half of the 20th century.Supporters of aggressive antitrust enforcement think that only antitrust suits prevented IBM from commandeering the personal-computer market and Microsoft from taking over the internet. But that’s an urban legend.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

The Biggest Revelations From the Microsoft Xbox Leaks

In what’s being cited as the biggest leak in the company’s history, Microsoft revealed a massive amount of information about forthcoming Xbox refreshes, next-gen systems, and more after uploading a series of un-redacted documents to a court website as part of the ongoing Federal Trade Commission v. Microsoft case. The leak, which ricocheted across the internet Tuesday, offers not just a roadmap for the gaming giant’s years to come, but also never-before-seen insight into Microsoft’s inner workings. The files were discovered early Tuesday morning by users on gaming forum ResetEra. FTC spokesperson Douglass Farrar tells WIRED that the organization was not responsible for the uploaded plans; the court later confirmed. Leaks happen constantly in the game industry—earlier this year, Sony suffer...

India eyes bigger share of lab-grown diamond mkt

JAIPUR: India is taking a shot at the global diamond trade with its lab-grown variety, whose exports were estimated at around $1.5 billion in 2022-23. Fuelling its expectations is US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recognising it as 'cultured', instead of artificial or synthetic. On the eve of the G20 ministerial meeting here, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said lab-grown diamonds are made through natural elements and the recognition by US FTC will further enhance their acceptance globally and benefit Indian entities. "It is a huge thumbs up for the Indian industry." The government had sought to provide an impetus to lab-grown diamonds in this year's budget and provided for a grant of Rs 242 crore to IIT-Madras to establish an India Centre for Lab-Grown Diamond. These diamonds...

The EU Urges the US to Join the Fight to Regulate AI

The world's most valuable and dominant internet companies are based in the US, but the nation’s unproductive lawmakers and business-friendly courts have effectively outsourced the regulation of tech giants to the EU. That has given tremendous power to Didier Reynders, the European commissioner for justice, who is in charge of crafting and enforcing laws that apply across the 27-nation bloc. After nearly four years on the job, he’s tired of hearing big talk from the US with little action.Ahead of his latest round of biannual meetings with US officials, including attorney general Merrick Garland in Washington, DC, tomorrow, Reynders told WIRED why the US needs to finally step up, where a probe into ChatGPT is headed, and why he made contentious comments about one of the world’s most promine...

Biden FTC Effort to Go After Elon Musk’s Twitter Exposed, Elon and GOP Demanding Answers – RedState

We’ve seen a lot of concerning censorship efforts on social media by the Biden administration. A recent federal court decision in Missouri v. Biden busted the Biden team big time and imposed a preliminary injunction on them not to illegally censor. It tells you where the Biden team is, as the court noted in denying a stay of the injunction, that the Biden administration is appealing and wants to fight an injunction that only prohibited illegal conduct. Earlier in the week, I reported on a story that hasn’t gotten the attention it deserves — the FBI colluded with the Ukrainian spy agency SBU to try to censor U.S. users on social media. The Ukrainians would highlight who they wanted flagged, and then the FBI would lean on the social media companies. That’s why it’s so gratifying to have ...
