50,000 eligible students didn’t apply for Bright Futures money over 5+ years. Leaders want to change that

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Close to 300,000 people with student loan debt totaling $7.4 billion will have their debt forgiven, according to an announcement by the Biden Administration on Friday morning. The announcement came a couple of hours before students at William M. Raines High School learned more about the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program. The state is hoping more students sign up for the program, instead of leaving free money for their education on the table.“It’s free money, you’re going to go to school debt-free. Everybody wants to go to school debt-free,” Daveon Ghee, a junior at Raines High School said.Ghee said he plans to head to UCF to study hospitality management. Two brothers plead guilty to insider trading charges related to taking Trump Media public

Two Florida brothers pleaded guilty Wednesday to insider trading charges, admitting making over $22 million illegally before the public announcement in 2021 that an acquisition firm was taking former President Donald Trump's media company public.Michael and Gerald Shvartsman entered their pleas to a single count of securities fraud in Manhattan federal court, where Judge Lewis J. Liman set sentencing for July 17.The men said that they knew they were committing a crime when they made trades in October 2021 through a New York broker, buying shares of Digital World Acquisition Corp., a so-called blank check company designed to take another company public without an IPO. The pair had been tipped off that Digital World had planned to merge with Trump Media & Technology, whose main asset is...

DeSantis Is Right About Medicaid

North Carolina has become the 40th state to succumb to federal cash and adopt ObamaCare’s Medicaid expansion for able-bodied working-age adults. A new study from the Paragon Health Institute shows there is little to celebrate. Overall health is unlikely to improve despite this massive increase in public welfare. We now have 10 years of data on ObamaCare’s Medicaid expansion. The evidence against the policy is overwhelming: Expansion leads to a surge in spending but reduces healthcare access for traditional Medicaid enrollees such as low-income children and people with disabilities. And it doesn’t improve health.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

A Disney World Survival Kit: 7 Gadgets to Make Your Trip Cheaper and More Comfortable

HERE I AM on Main Street in the Magic Kingdom—again. Neither I nor my wife long for this place. During our first family trip to Disney World in 2018, she had to swallow vats of Dramamine to stomach the rides. And I resented getting taken on the proverbial ones—being forced to pay $5 for a stale churro offends me. But when my in-laws decided to go this fall, we felt obliged to take our daughter with the rest of her cousins.Rob Daniel, 47, is well aware that parents need help braving Disney trips. For Ear Scouts, the YouTube channel he co-owns, the Celebration, Fla.-based web developer documents his weekly visits to the theme parks, reviews new attractions and compiles guides on how to get the most out of a visit. Armed with his advice and my own hard-won knowledge, I packed quite different...

Art Basel Miami Beach Review: An Art Fair in Need of Excitement

Miami Beach, Fla.With Mr. Micawber, Charles Dickens gave us the eternal optimist. A perennial debtor who nonetheless held out hope that things would work out, he came to mind while wending my way through the labyrinthine booths at Art Basel Miami Beach. Exploring the cavernous convention center where the annual fair is held, searching for the truly inspiring, I kept thinking “Something will turn up.” Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
