Activist Nuns, With Stake in Smith & Wesson, Sue Gun Maker Over AR-15 Rifles

Updated Dec. 5, 2023 3:49 pm ETA group of activist nuns filed an unusual shareholder lawsuit to pressure gun maker Smith & Wesson to drastically change the way it markets, makes and sells its popular version of the AR-15 rifle. The so-called shareholder derivative action, which the nuns filed in Nevada state court Tuesday against publicly traded Smith & Wesson, alleges that company leaders are putting shareholders at risk. They argue the leaders are exposing the company to liability by the way they have made and sold the rifle, which has been used in several mass shootings in recent years.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Many More Voters With Guns

More than half of American voters say that they or someone in their household owns a gun, according to a poll by NBC News. That’s the highest level since its polls began asking in 1999. After progressives drove up firearm ownership with policies that are soft on violent crime, they can’t figure out why their gun-control ideas fail to pass. The share of voters with a firearm in the household is 52%, up from 46% in 2019 and 42% in 2013. A partisan split is evident. Gun households now include 66% of Republicans, 45% of independents, and 41% of Democrats. This is no surprise, in part because rural areas tilt right, and that’s where hunting is a family event and bears might be prowling the woods.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Updated Nov. 6, 2023 10:18 am ETThe Biden administration has approved the transfer of some 24,000 rifles to the Israeli national police, raising concerns among some U.S. officials that the small arms could end up in the hands of Israeli settlers and be used indiscriminately against Palestinian civilians. The decision, made in recent days, includes the transfer of roughly $30 million worth of automatic and semiautomatic weapons through licenses approved by the State Department. It comes as U.S. support for the campaign Israel is waging against the Palestinian-Islamist militant group Hamas inside Gaza receives new scrutiny. The international community has grown alarmed as thousands of innocent civilians caught up in the conflict have been killed with airstrikes and other operations as part o...

The Selling of the AR-15, America’s Most Controversial Gun

Listen to article(3 minutes)In December 2005, five groups of Wall Street investors flew in private jets to Portland, Maine, where they took waiting limousines to a warren of metal buildings that resembled a midsize lumberyard. They had come to Bushmaster Firearms in pursuit of a highly profitable product whose market was growing faster than any other in America’s stagnant gun industry. The product was the AR-15, and red-hot Bushmaster, the nation’s leading manufacturer of the rifle, had decided to auction itself to the highest bidder.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
