Toyota recalls nearly 1.9 million RAV4 SUVs in the U.S. over fire risk

Toyota is recalling roughly 1.9 million RAV4 sport utility vehicles in the U.S. because the batteries can shift during sharp turns and potentially cause a fire. The recall, which Toyota announced Wednesday, affects certain RAV4s from the 2013 through 2018 model years. The Japanese automaker said in a statement that some replacement 12-volt batteries used in the SUVs have smaller top dimensions than others. If the hold-down clamp is not tightened properly, the battery could move, allowing the positive terminal to contact the clamp and short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire, the company said.Toyota said it is still preparing a fix. When the remedy is ready, dealers will replace the hold-down clamp, battery tray and positive terminal cover with improved ones. The compa...

China Coast Guard Ship Collides With Philippine Boat in South China Sea

A Chinese coast guard ship collided with a Philippine vessel it was seeking to block in the South China Sea, the Philippines said, marking an escalation in tensions between Beijing and the U.S. ally in a volatile area.  The Philippine boat was on its way to deliver supplies to an outpost the country maintains at Second Thomas Shoal, about 100 nautical miles off its coast. A small detachment of marines lives there, on a dilapidated World War-II era ship the Philippines deliberately ran aground in 1999 to assert its rights. China claims Second Thomas Shoal, as it does much of the South China Sea, and calls the presence of the long-grounded ship illegal.  Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Maui County sues Hawaii Electric over deadly Lahaina fire

Shares of Hawaiian Electric Co.'s parent fell more than 18% by market close Friday, one day after the utility was sued by Maui County over the fires that devastated Lahaina earlier this month.Maui County accused Hawaiian Electric of negligently failing to shut off power despite exceptionally high winds and dry conditions — saying that the destruction from the deadly Aug. 8 fires could have been avoided if the company had taken essential actions. Outrage towards Hawaiian Electric grew as witness accounts and video indicated that sparks from power lines ignited fires as utility poles snapped in the winds, which were driven by a passing hurricane. In the weeks since the fires — which killed at least 115 people and left an unknown number of others missing — broke out, Hawaiian Electric Industr...
