London Stansted airport has been given the green light to extend its existing terminal building. The project was unveiled this summer, and has now been granted planning permission by the Planning Inspectorate. It follows the shelving of plans for a separate Arrivals Halls at the airport in 2019. A three-bay extension will now be built at the back of the existing terminal building, adding 16,500 sqm of capacity. The scheme will create a more spacious departure lounge, with more seating, shops, bars and restaurants, as well as additional check-in desks, increased baggage capacity and a larger security hall with more lanes. Southampton airport has officially opened the 164-metre extension to its existing runway, which it says will allow it to attract more airlines and “help deliver new routes and services for the people of Southampton and the wider region”. Work began to lay the 164-metre extension to the northern end of the airport’s runway in March of this year, and the extension became operational in August. This week’s official opening ceremony was attended by Aviation Minister Baroness Vere, and included a take-off of a World War II Spitfire from the runway extension. Permission to extend the runway was originally granted by Eastleigh Borough Council in 2021, but local opposition led to the decision going to the Court of Appeal, where it was upheld in August 2022.
