Next Up for School Choice: Tennessee

Competition was top of mind at a press conference in Tennessee on Tuesday, and appropriately so. Republican Governors are in a healthy race to offer the most school choice. “Nine states have passed us in this effort,” said Gov. Bill Lee as he announced a proposal for universal education savings accounts (ESAs) in his state. The proposal would provide ESAs worth about $7,000 to 20,000 students next year, and open up to all students in the 2025-26 school year. ESAs in the state are currently available only to special-needs students, or for those with lower income in three metropolitan areas. The new proposal would “make choice a reality for every family and every child in Tennessee,” Mr. Lee said.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Texas School Choice on the Brink

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott wants his state to quit falling behind on school choice, and last month when he called a 30-day special legislative session on education freedom, he promised to convene another one if lawmakers failed to act. Now he should be ready to keep his word, given the lack of progress in the House, with one day of session remaining.A breakthrough came last week when Mr. Abbott said he’d reached a deal with House Speaker Dade Phelan on a bill to establish education savings accounts, or ESAs, for families who want options outside of public schools. The universal program would be open to any K-12 student, and it would provide about $10,500 to each. That’s more generous than the $8,000 ESA package passed by the state Senate earlier in the session.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & ...
