Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum Review: Time’s Up for ICE Trucks

I come from a long line of F-150s. One of my earliest vehicular memories is bouncing around in the back of a red, late-90s step-side that my grandpa trucked around his cattle ranch in the Sierra Nevadas. That truck eventually gave way to a silver 2004 model that got passed down to me in 2014, then a blue-green 2015 model that I inherited when Gammy and Papa (as I still call them) sold the ranch a few years later. And I've been driving them hard around the Pacific Northwest ever since. For myself and Papa Hall, now in his mid-eighties, trucks are tools. Despite the fact that he did shell out for extras like an extra-large tank (“so that I wouldn't have to pay for gas in California”), they were for hauling firewood, towing trailers, and driving a series of black and brown labs to go duck hun...

Pollution rising, India Inc gets into action to help employees breathe easy

As New Delhi and Mumbai grapple with air pollution, with the national capital’s air quality described as equivalent to smoking 25 to 40 cigarettes a day, corporate India is taking action so that their employees can breathe a little better. Several companies are banking on pandemic-era flexible work schedules until the air clears, and many government and private firms are also offering incentives such as low-cost loans to employees investing in green technologies such as electric vehicles (EVs) and solar cookers. NTPC, for instance, is reimbursing employees for buying air purifiers, EV chargers, domestic solar thermal water heaters, and solar cookers. The country’s largest thermal power generator is also offering its over 17,000 employees conveyance advances at subs...

India proposes slashing EV import taxes to clinch UK free trade deal

By Shruti Srivastava India is proposing reducing import taxes on some electric vehicles from the UK in an effort to clinch a free-trade deal between the two nations by the end of the year, according to two people familiar with the discussions. New Delhi is considering a concessional tariff of 30% on 2,500 electric vehicles imported annually from the UK priced above $80,000, the people said, asking not to be identified as the talks are private. India currently levies taxes between 70% and 100% on cars imported as completely built units, depending on their value. The UK’s demand for import concessions on electric vehicles is one of the few outstanding issues in the free trade talks. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi had hoped to ...

Swedish Ports Threaten to Block Teslas From Entering the Country

Workers at the seven Tesla-branded Swedish repair shops earn less and lack the same pensions and insurance as other mechanics in the industry, Pettersson claims. Tesla did not respond to WIRED’s request for comment.Sweden was Tesla’s fifth-biggest market in Europe this year, with 16,309 new vehicles registered in the first nine months, according to Bloomberg. IF Metall has been attempting to get Tesla to sign a collective agreement with workers in its repair shops since 2018, adds Pettersson. “A year ago, [Tesla] finally decided, no, they won't sign,” he says, adding that the strike will continue until there is an agreement in place. “We are prepared to be on strike for a long time.”The repair shop strike has been criticized as ineffective. Members of Sweden’s official Tesla club, a group...

Brace for the Wind and Electric-Vehicle Bailouts

Oct. 29, 2023 12:21 pm ETFord assured investors last week that its generous deal with the United Auto Workers wouldn’t threaten its profitability. Maybe. The same can’t be said of its electric vehicles, which lost $3.1 billion during the first nine months of this year. Those losses will doubtless grow, and anyone who thinks Washington won’t give auto makers another bailout should think again. Last week Munich-based Siemens Energy, one of the world’s top wind manufacturers, said the German government is prepared to extend as much as €16 billion (or $16.9 billion) in state guarantees to rescue it.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Here’s the Truth Behind the Biggest (and Dumbest) Battery Myths

In lithium-ion batteries, that’s no longer the case. Modern batteries are capable of reading their state no matter their level of charge, and when your device isn’t in use the strain on the battery is almost the same as if it was off altogether, so you wouldn’t be giving the battery much of a break if you turned it off anyway.Batteries perform worse when they’re coldFalse (mostly)Actually, the opposite is true. “Using your battery in cool temperatures and keeping your battery cool is much better for battery life,” says Griffith. Exposing your battery to high temperatures is a much more likely way to end up reducing its overall life. “You don’t want your battery to be hot. You don’t want it to overheat when it’s charging, you don’t want to leave it in the sun or in your car.”But why do bat...

Chinese Companies and Your Tax Dollars

It isn’t easy luring corporations to Illinois these days, so Gov. J.B. Pritzker celebrated when the state landed a big electric-vehicle battery plant in September. The real winner, however, is Gotion, the Chinese company that is collecting taxpayer financing to subsidize its EV manufacturing. Mr. Pritzker boasted that the new $2 billion factory would bring 2,600 green jobs to the Land of Lincoln and represents “the most significant new manufacturing investment in Illinois in decades.” The company’s decision was helped by a $536 million Illinois subsidy package, including $213 million in tax benefits, a 30-year property tax freeze and $125 million from the state-lending program Invest in Illinois. Taiwan’s Foxconn to build ‘AI factories’ with Nvidia

Taipei CNN  —  Taiwan’s Foxconn says it plans to build artificial intelligence (AI) data factories with technology from American chip giant Nvidia, as the electronics maker ramps up efforts to become a major global player in electric car manufacturing. Foxconn Chairman Young Liu and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang jointly announced the plans on Wednesday in Taipei. The duo said the new facilities using Nvidia’s chips and software will enable Foxconn to better utilize AI in its electric vehicles (EV). “We are at the beginning of a new computing revolution,” Huang said. “This is the beginning of a brand new way of doing software — using computers to write software that no humans can.” Large compu...
