Tesla sales drop as competition in the electric vehicle market heats up

Tesla sales fell sharply last quarter as competition in the electric vehicle market increased worldwide and price cuts the company enacted months ago failed to entice more buyers. The Austin, Texas, company owned by Elon Musk, said Tuesday it delivered 386,810 vehicles from January through March, almost 9% below the 423,000 it sold during the same period last year. The company blamed the decline in part on phasing in an updated version of the Model 3 sedan at its Fremont, California factory. Plant shutdowns due to shipping diversions in the Red Sea, and an arson attack that knocked out power to its German factory also caused fewer deliveries, it said. Last year, Tesla dramatically lowered prices by up to $20,000 for some models. In March, it temporarily knocked $1,000 off the Model Y, its ...

What the U.A.W. Won | The New Yorker

The six-week rolling strike by members of the United Auto Workers union seems to be at an end. After making deals with Ford and Stellantis last week, U.A.W. leaders reached a tentative agreement with General Motors on Monday, opening the way for a full return to work. Although some details of the agreements haven’t yet been made public, it’s clear that the U.A.W. has achieved a historic victory for its members. Capitalizing on the industry’s high profits, a tight labor market, and support from President Biden, the union forced the Big Three automakers to make big concessions not just on wage rates but in other areas, too.Shawn Fain, the leader of the U.A.W., has hailed the outcome of the strike as a major win for the entire labor movement, and he’s right. Like the recent deals between the...

EV buyers may get an instant rebate for car purchases starting in 2024

Car dealers can give buyers an instant rebate for purchasing certain electric vehicles starting in January of 2024, according to new guidance released by the IRS. The memo says eligible vehicles may qualify for a tax credit of up to $7,500. However, the credit amount will depend on whether an EV and its buyer meet certain requirements, and when a car is actually purchased. For an electric car to qualify, it needs to have a minimum battery capacity of seven kilowatt hours. Buyers can’t claim the credit if their adjusted gross income exceeds certain thresholds – $300,000 if married and filing jointly, and $150,000 for the majority of single taxpayers. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the EV also can not exceed specific price points. For sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks, ...

The U.A.W. Strike Threat Poses a Tricky Political Challenge for Biden

With just three days until their current contract expires, nearly a hundred and fifty thousand members of the United Auto Workers (U.A.W.) union are preparing to walk out from their jobs at the Big Three automakers: Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis (the parent company of Chrysler). Negotiations are ongoing, but in recent days Shawn Fain, the U.A.W. president, dismissed the companies’ initial contract offers as grossly inadequate. “If we don’t get our justice, I can guarantee you one thing—come this Thursday at midnight, there will be action,” Fain said.Recent years have seen a resurgence of labor activism, with strike threats from railway workers, UPS drivers, and other groups seeking to raise their wages and improve their employment conditions. The auto workers have asked for a four-...

Trump Wages War On Electric Vehicles

This article is part of HuffPost’s biweekly politics newsletter. Click here to subscribe. Not all of this week’s big Donald Trump news was tied to indictments. On Thursday, the former president distributed a video and statement on the auto industry ― specifically, about how he intends to save it from what he says is President Joe Biden’s neglect. The missive covered a lot of ground, including how, according to Trump, Biden’s failure to control inflation and get tough with trading partners has put U.S. carmakers at a disadvantage. But the main thrust of the message was an attack on Biden’s support for electric vehicles.Biden and his Democratic allies have been touting that support, especially through subsidies that were part of last year’s Inflation Reduction Act, as one of their biggest acco...

Ford has dropped the price on its electric pickup truck

Ford Motor is cutting the price of its electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning, by between $6,000 and $10,000 depending on the model. The Michigan automaker said Monday that access to raw materials for the truck's battery is improving and that it has upgraded its suburban Detroit factors where the truck is manufactured, enabling the company to drop prices. Those developments also mean customers will get their custom-ordered F-150 Lightning much faster, Ford said.
