China Confronts a New Political Reality in Taiwan: No Friends

Updated Dec. 29, 2023 12:08 am ETTAIPEI—A drawing of Taiwan at the presidential campaign headquarters of the island’s ruling party shows strikingly little concern for north and south. Instead, the island is shown turned on its side, with China and the Taiwan Strait conspicuously absent. The drawing reflects the worldview of the Democratic Progressive Party, which over the past eight years has sought to carve out an identity for the self-ruled island that is separate from mainland China. But it also represents a broader change in Taiwan that sits uneasily with Communist Party leaders 1,000 miles to the northwest in Beijing.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Updated Dec. 28, 2023 7:38 pm ETRepublican presidential candidate Nikki Haley said Thursday the Civil War was caused by a fight over slavery as she tried to tamp down a political uproar hours after she failed to mention it when asked about the conflict’s origins.“Of course the Civil War was about slavery, we know that, that’s the easy part of it,” she said on a Pulse of NH radio show. “I’m from the South. Of course you know it’s about slavery.”Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Biden Struggles to Push Trade Deals With Allies as Election Approaches

WASHINGTON—The Biden administration Thursday extended for two years a temporary measure to suspend Trump-era tariffs on European steel and aluminum, struggling to deliver on key trade policies involving close allies after nearly three years in office.Washington and Brussels have failed to find a permanent solution to eliminate the levies more than two years after the negotiations began. With the announcement, the administration will keep in place a temporary import quota system that replaced Trump-era tariffs while talks continue. The EU has criticized the temporary fix, which could be undone if Biden isn’t re-elected. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Worldwide, 2024 Elections Promise a Whirlwind

Dec. 28, 2023 12:49 pm ETIt’s (almost) election year, baby! Every year is important in its way, and most elections matter to someone. Even so, 2024 promises to be unusually electorally exciting due to the sheer amount of voting across the democratic world—and over what issues. What seems likely to be an awful U.S. presidential election in November is only part of the story. Hyperventilation about Donald Trump’s supposedly authoritarian instincts and well-founded concerns over Biden family corruption will motivate the major parties’ bases. But don’t lose sight of the global significance of this contest, given the security and economic threats and challenges confronting the winner. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Updated Dec. 27, 2023 2:44 pm ETWASHINGTON—Special counsel Jack Smith urged a federal judge Wednesday to fend off Donald Trump’s attempts to “inject politics” into the criminal case alleging he plotted to overturn the 2020 election results, taking particular aim at the former president’s claims that he is being subjected to a vindictive and selective prosecution. In a court filing, Smith’s team asked U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan to prevent Trump and his defense lawyers from turning “the courtroom into a forum in which he propagates irrelevant disinformation.”Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Haley Endorsement Marks Presidential Return of Koch Donor Network

The billionaire Koch family and its network of like-minded donors are tiptoeing back into presidential politics, putting money behind their opposition to former President Donald Trump and backing an alternative candidate in the 2024 Republican primary, Nikki Haley. So far, it hasn’t committed a lot of money to its play, which is seen by some as a long-shot bid to reassert influence in a party dominated by Trump and as a way to appease donors who want to be more politically active.  Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. How Can Spending Be Up When People Feel Down?

Dec. 26, 2023 11:00 pm ETAccording to the Misery Index, Americans shouldn’t be all that miserable. But they might only recently have started to catch on.Invented by the economist Arthur Okun, the Misery Index is the simple summing of the unemployment rate and the inflation rate. It first rose to prominence in the 1976 presidential election, when Jimmy Carter highlighted its high level in his campaign to unseat President Gerald Ford. This came back to bite him: When President Carter was running for re-election against Ronald Reagan in 1980, the index was even higher.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Alexei Navalny Lives – WSJ

Some residual good news for courage in 2023: Alexei Navalny is alive and has been located in a distant prison colony. His team says the leading opponent of Vladimir Putin’s despotism was moved without announcement to a prison called the Polar Wolf in the remote Arctic region of Yamalo-Nenets. This a frozen, isolated area known for some of the most brutal conditions in the Putin-era gulag. The context for his isolation is the Russian presidential election scheduled for March 17. There’s no chance Mr. Putin will lose in the rigged political system. But before Mr. Navalny disappeared, he and his team launched a campaign to expose that Mr. Putin is far less popular than the Kremlin claims.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
