Iran-Backed Forces Widen Their Attacks on Commercial Shipping

Updated Dec. 25, 2023 2:29 pm ETEscalating Iran-backed attacks against global commercial shipping in the Red Sea have heightened pressure on the Biden administration as officials scramble to protect trade while trying to avoid a direct confrontation with Tehran.The U.S. Navy said late Saturday that two more vessels had been attacked that day by Iranian-backed Houthi forces in Yemen, bringing the number of commercial ships attacked near a crucial passageway between the Horn of Africa and the Middle East to 15.  The Pentagon said earlier in the day that a chemical tanker in the Indian Ocean was struck by a drone launched directly from Iran, a claim Tehran denied.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Over three days they killed hundreds of men and teenage boys in a Darfur refugee camp, according to witnesses, local human-rights groups and international aid agencies.The Sudanese-Arab militia worked its way systematically through the tents, shacks and mud houses of the Ardamata camp, shooting male residents. NEW YORK—Ethiopian Tamirat Tola broke the men’s course record in winning the New York City Marathon on Sunday, toppling yet another mark in an era of super shoes that is remaking records across the sport.Tola broke away around mile 19 and finished the 26.2-mile course in 2 hours, four minutes and 58 seconds on a partly cloudy, balmy day.
