Verano Executive Bullish on the Future of the U.S. Cannabis Industry

The past year was pivotal for the legal cannabis industry’s acceptance as a mainstream business in the U.S. The Department of Health and Human Services in August recommended to the Drug Enforcement Administration that marijuana be reclassified to a less restrictive Schedule III substance from a Schedule I substance. The Senate Banking Committee, meanwhile, in September approved the Secure and Fair Enforcement Regulation Banking Act, which would give cannabis businesses greater access to banking services, and it now awaits a vote on the Senate floor. And in November, Ohio became the latest state to legalize adult recreational marijuana use, bringing the total number of U.S. states that permit recreational cannabis use to 24. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Supreme Court Weighs Purdue Pharma’s $6 Billion Opioid Settlement

WASHINGTON—Supreme Court justices wrestled Monday with the uncomfortable bargain struck between most victims of the opioid crisis and the Sackler family, whose Purdue Pharma promoted the addictive painkiller OxyContin: providing timely compensation for survivors in exchange for granting the wealthy family immunity from future civil lawsuits. That settlement was reached before a bankruptcy judge and approved in May by a federal appeals court in New York. It would see the Sacklers pay $6 billion to individual victims and state governments in exchange for eliminating potential liability for additional claims, such as fraud—even though they, unlike Purdue, haven’t sought bankruptcy protection. Once the Cutting Edge of Cool, Portland Is Now Taking Lessons From Milwaukee

PORTLAND, Ore.—Fed up with vandalism and rampant drug use in Portland’s struggling downtown, Steven Lien set out this summer to find a new location for the self-described largest men’s underwear store in North America. The 67-year-old Oregon native even put down a deposit on an appealing vacant storefront across the river for his business, underU4men.
