Disney-Reliance entertainment biz deal may be beset with antitrust issues

Elara Capital estimates Disney and Viacom18 together will have the biggest share of the TV ads market at 43% while Zee-Sony would have 25%, making it difficult for others to compete A merger of Walt Disney's India unit and billionaire Mukesh Ambani's media business would create an entertainment powerhouse in India, but lawyers say any deal would draw intense antitrust scrutiny and assets would likely need to be shed. Disney and India's Reliance, which each have a major streaming service as well as 120 TV channels between them, are looking at merging into an entity in which Ambani's group would likely have a majority stake, sources said this week. In particular, a deal could benefit Disney whose Hotstar streaming app has been loss-making. CEO Bob Iger said last month th...

Why large consumer brands have a lot at stake in Disney, Sony deals

By Andy Mukherjee Two large media deals in India are giving the likes of Unilever Plc and Procter & Gamble Co. a reason to worry: If entertainment goes the way of telecom and ends up effectively as a duopoly, will it become costlier for large consumer brands to reach 1.4 billion people?    The first of these two transactions may come as early as Monday and would see Walt Disney Co. enter into a non-bidding agreement with Mukesh Ambani to merge their media businesses in the country. The richest Asian tycoon will hold at least 51% of the combined television and streaming operations.  The second, which is looking half-baked even after being in the oven for more than two years, is expected to meld Sony Group Corp.’s local unit with Zee Entertainment Enter...

Disney, Reliance plan London meeting for India media merger talks: Report

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries and U.S. giant Walt Disney are discussing a plan to hold next-stage talks about their India media business merger in London next week, two people familiar with the matter said. Disney and Reliance have held talks to merge their India businesses by forming a joint venture company in which Ambani's media unit would hold a majority stake, though finer details of business structures and valuations are yet to be discussed. Next week, senior Disney executives and Reliance officials from its headquarters in Mumbai are likely to fly to London for the proposed meeting, said the two sources, declining to be named as the talks are private. Reliance and Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A pos...

Elon Musk Wants Bob Iger ‘Immediately’ Fired From Disney

Elon Musk on Thursday called for the firing of Bob Iger, escalating his attacks on the Disney CEO over the entertainment company’s decision to temporarily suspend advertising on X, formerly Twitter, over an antisemitic post by the tech billionaire.Last month, Musk appeared to endorse a post saying Jews are “pushing the exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them.”Musk replied to the post, writing: “You have said the actual truth.”Musk has since apologized and walked back that statement, which prompted an advertising boycott against X, conceding it was “one of the most foolish if not the most foolish” posts he’s made on the platform during an appearance at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit. Still, during the same interview, he...

Money talks, and Disney doesn’t like what it says

Sometime far in the future, or maybe as soon as five years from now, parents will regale their children with tales of the ancient times, when the average father was happy to order a Bud Light at the bar and parents lined up at the movie theater for each new Disney movie no matter what.I’m old enough (and young enough) to remember getting excited about every Pixar release, knowing that the next film would be a guaranteed classic (and in the era from Toy Story to Up, I was right). Disney bought Pixar in 2006. Since then, nearly half of Pixar’s offerings have been sequels or spin-offs. HOUSE INCUMBENTS STEPPING DOWN TO RUN FOR STATE OR HIGHER OFFICE IN 2024 Now, Disney is losing millions on streaming, and the company’s box-office showings over Thanksgiving were miserable.
