Can Police Simply Take Your Car?

Stephanie Wilson was never accused of a crime, but Detroit police seized her car anyway. For nearly two years, Ms. Wilson asked to see a judge. But her requests were ignored, and, instead, she was forced to attend repeated pretrial conferences with prosecutors. Missing one would automatically mean losing her car forever.Ms. Wilson insisted she had done nothing wrong. Prosecutors took the car because they alleged her ex-boyfriend had used it to transport drugs, even though he was never charged with a crime and no drugs were found in the car. More important, the car belonged to Ms. Wilson, not her ex. Still, prosecutors refused even to let Ms. Wilson retrieve her child’s car seat from the car while she waited for a judge to hear her case.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rig...

UAW Hits Ram Pickup-Truck Plant in Latest Strike Expansion Against Detroit Carmakers

The United Auto Workers on Monday expanded its continuing strike against Detroit’s car companies by shutting down a pickup-truck plant, a surprise action that hit Chrysler-parent Stellantis’s largest U.S. factory. The 6,800-worker plant, located in Sterling Heights, Mich., in suburban Detroit, makes the Ram 1500 pickup truck, among the automaker’s most profitable vehicles. The walkout brings the total number of UAW-represented on strike at the Detroit automakers, including Ford Motor and General Motors, to more than 40,000, the UAW said. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. The Auto Makers Cry for EV Mercy

General Motors last week said it is delaying electric pick-up truck production in Michigan, citing slowing demand for EVs and the need to make them more profitable. But the Biden Administration’s back-door EV mandate is ironically causing trouble for its plans for green-vehicle investment. On Sept. 14, the day before the United Auto Workers launched its strike, the Energy Department sent letters to Ford, General Motors and Stellantis asking for help understanding “specific challenges” to its proposed rule that would reduce the credits under the corporate average fuel economy (Cafe) standards for producing electric vehicles.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Updated Oct. 21, 2023 12:34 am ETThe United Auto Workers’ leader said negotiations for a new labor contract with Detroit’s three car companies have been progressing, but he threatened to expand the union’s now six-week-long strike if they don’t move more.UAW President Shawn Fain said during a livestream to members Friday that General Motors, Ford Motor and Chrysler-parent Stellantis have each offered 23% wage increases for factory workers over more than four years. Ford chair bashes UAW for escalating strike, says Ford is not the enemy — Toyota, Honda and Tesla are

The chairman of Ford is urging the United Auto Workers to end its strike against the company his great grandfather Henry Ford started in 1903, arguing that America's future is tied to the success of the iconic car brand. In his first public statement since the union strike began last month, Bill Ford on Monday said some UAW members are his long-time friends. But he also criticized the union, saying its leaders have tried to paint the Michigan automaker as the enemy. "This should not be Ford versus the UAW," the chair said during a press conference in Dearborn, Michigan. "It should be Ford and the UAW versus Toyota, Honda and Tesla — and all the Chinese companies that want to enter our home market."  UAW expands strike to Ford Louisvi...

Ford recalls more than 238,000 Explorers over potential rear axle bolt failure

Ford is recalling more than 238,000 Explorers in the U.S. because a rear axle bolt can fail, potentially causing a loss of drive power or allowing the SUVs to roll away while in park. The recall comes after U.S. safety regulators opened an investigation into the problem after getting two complaints that repairs didn't work in two previous recalls this year and in 2022.Affected are certain Explorers from the 2020 through 2022 model years. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says in documents posted Friday on its website that the rear axle horizontal mounting bolt can fracture and cause the driveshaft to disconnect, increasing the risk of a crash.Dealers will replace a bushing (which is a cushion made of rubber or other ru...
