Chinese and American Hospitals Learn the Value of Germs

Here we go again. The World Health Organization on Nov. 22 said it is looking into media reports of Chinese hospitals overwhelmed by sick children. Chinese authorities attribute the surge to higher circulation of seasonal bugs like the flu and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. The reports have raised concerns about a potentially novel pathogen spreading in China and renewed suspicions about Beijing’s lack of transparency.“It is not at all clear when this outbreak started as it would be unusual for so many children to be affected so quickly,” the International Society for Infectious Diseases’ Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases reported.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. How to Avoid Being Boring at 60

By Rob LaZebnikNov. 23, 2023 9:00 pm ETListen to article(2 minutes)When I recently turned 60, I realized with alarm that I was starting to see unmistakable signs from friends and colleagues that I was becoming—there’s no easy way to put this—boring. It was almost as if the same stories I had told a hundred times were no longer interesting to them. But what else was I supposed to talk about? It wasn’t like I had anything new and exciting to tell them. That’s when it hit me: I didn’t have anything new and exciting to tell them. My life had gotten entrenched in routine. Calcified, if you will. I had stopped evolving, and I think we all know what happens then—like the dodo, you stop flying, get fat and Dutch sailors eat you on their voyage home.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. WHO Presses China for Data on Wave of Undiagnosed Pneumonia Cases

Updated Nov. 23, 2023 8:19 pm ETThe World Health Organization said it has asked China to provide more information on an outbreak of pneumonia among children in northern parts of the country, an unusual public disclosure that revives questions about Beijing’s transparency on the spread of infectious diseases. In a statement issued Wednesday, the WHO cited reports about “clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in northern China,” which prompted the United Nations agency to ask Beijing for “additional epidemiologic and clinical information, as well as laboratory results” related to the infections. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Stricken Gaza Hospital Reports Deaths of Newborns as Israel, Hamas Clash Nearby

Gaza Becomes a Death Trap for Children as Israeli Strikes Intensify

Listen to article(1 minute)Abdullah Abu Nada was working in his laboratory at Gaza City’s biggest hospital last month when his friend came in with chilling news: The house where his wife and four children were sheltering had been hit by an Israeli airstrike. As survivors of the attack began arriving at the emergency room, Abu Nada, a chemist, rushed through the chaotic halls, searching for his family. One small boy had been pulled from the rubble, but when soot was rubbed from the child’s face, it was clear it wasn’t Abu Nada’s youngest son. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Should Transgender Treatments Be Available to Minors?

Editor’s note: In this Future View, students discuss gender dysphoria and “gender transition” procedures for children under 18. Next week we’ll ask, “The state police are investigating anti-Semitic threats at Cornell, while Jewish students at NYU were advised to hide in the library as a mob surged onto campus. Years of campus agitation against Israel seem to have boiled over since the attacks of Oct. 7 into visible anti-Semitism in America’s universities. How should the nation’s campuses deal with this? What are we to make of a recent poll finding that 18- to 25-year-olds support Hamas at more than double the rate of older generations?” Students should click here to submit opinions of fewer than 250 words before Nov. 7. The best responses will be published that night.Copyright ©2023 Dow J...
