Regarding Henry Kissinger – WSJ

Before I knew him in the flesh, he was a presence on the screen—a shock of white hair, a pair of horn-rimmed spectacles, and a gravelly voice out of history: Henry Kissinger on Zoom. It was July 2020, and I was interviewing to become a researcher at Kissinger Associates. Halfway through, a nurse edged a cup of tea and a serving of carrot cake into view. Before indulging, he turned and said to me: “The first time I did this on Zoom, I said, . . . ‘Why don’t you bring some for our guests?’ ” He smiled and his voice softened as he spoke. There it was, the self-deprecating humor. Ninety-seven years old and winking at senescence.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Justice O’Connor Knew the Limits of Judging—and Government

Sandra Day O’Connor shattered expectations and made history as the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court. She was often the pivotal vote, and her jurisprudence leaves a lasting mark on American law, from national security and education to federalism and beyond. As important, she was a model of judgment and civility. After retiring from the bench to take care of her beloved husband, John, she dedicated herself to reviving the nation’s civic culture. With faith in our established structures at an all-time low, O’Connor’s second act, as a champion for American institutions and good citizenship, provides a timely reminder of this country’s enduring promise.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Henry Kissinger’s Hard Compromises | The New Yorker

In the spring of 1969, shortly after Richard Nixon reached the White House, he and his national-security adviser, Henry Kissinger, started plotting a geopolitical earthquake. Two decades after the Communist revolution in China, Beijing and Washington still had no official relations and Nixon, though he was a fierce anti-Communist, wanted to devise a way to pull the Chinese—a fifth of the world’s population—into the global system.
