Facing Housing Shortages, Cities Try Cramming More Units on Lots

The Austin duplex Jane Kurzawa Cravey and her then-husband moved into in 1979 was rundown, but the couple was able to use rental income from the second unit to pay off most of the mortgage and make improvements. As her property taxes climbed over the years, Cravey wanted to add a third unit as a way to pay off taxes and debts. She couldn’t make it work under the city’s regulations—until this year when Austin, Texas, changed its land development code to allow for up to three units on single-family lots. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. The Intimate Reality of the J.F.K. Assassination

In the annals of American time, the November 22nd that happened sixty years ago today still casts a very long shadow. It is a cliché, but true nonetheless, that certain events are singularly imprinted—or, maybe, emblazoned—on the consciousness of entire generations. That November day remains pivotal for my generation, as Pearl Harbor was for my father’s, or 9/11 for my daughter’s.What is perhaps less evident is how these events not only forge a strong memory, but will suddenly make memory exist, turning our minds inside out. Whereas private things rising from within ourselves had once reigned, public things, coming from outside, now take pride of place. The private obsessions come back, of course, but the public ones now become hard to shake or ignore. My father feels this way about Pearl...

American Airlines unveils catering facility at Dallas Fort Worth International – Business Traveller

American Airlines has unveiled a $100 million catering facility to serve its hub at Dallas Fort Worth International airport (DFW). At just under 20,000 sqm, the building is the largest airline catering kitchen in the country according to the carrier and is more than three times the size of a football field. The airline says that, since it opened at the start of the summer, the kitchen has helped to “minimise catering delays, improving the hub’s operation which in turn improves the airline’s operation”. During peak travel season, the catering facility prepares nearly 15,000 fresh meals a day here. The airline and its regional partners operated more than 800 daily flights from DFW to more than 240 destinations in 23 different countries this past summer. Examples of high-tech equipment incl...

Dallas City Council Committee hears $399 million park bond money request Tuesday – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

A Dallas City Council Committee Tuesday will hear the big $399 million Parks Department request for public improvement bond money. It is a very large ask as other Dallas needs compete for a large share of a planned $1 billion bond referendum in 2024. https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/23935785-9-5-23parkbondmoney Every part of the city would see improvements in the park plan. One example is Grauwyler Park on Harry Hines Boulevard in Northwest Dallas. On a hot Labor Day, families enjoyed the spray ground there, but the swimming pool was closed and not just because it was a holiday. A notice of the closure was posted on the pool door, directing visitors to other pools. The park bond plan says Grauwyler is one of 7 Dallas pools past their useful life. Each of...
