Electric Scooter IPO to Test Enthusiasm for India’s EV Story

An initial public offering planned for next year in India could be a crucial test for the country’s budding electric-vehicle market. India’s Ola Electric, which makes two-wheeled electric scooters, filed in late December a draft prospectus for a public listing, seeking to raise about $662 million. It will become the first EV maker to list in India and will probably draw significant interest from investors. The Softbank-backed firm plans to use proceeds from the offering mainly for the expansion of its battery cell manufacturing facility in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Carmakers Are Drowning in Cash

Most carmakers are ending the year with lots of cash and lots of worries. Share buybacks are an antidepressant, not a cure, but they are better than nothing. It has been a highly profitable year for the traditional car industry. Production recovered following the microchip-related supply constraints of 2021 and 2022. Having previously been starved of inventory, consumers and fleet owners bought new vehicles despite higher interest rates. Globally, sales are on track to rise 10% this year, according to forecasting firm GlobalData.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Construction Loans, Like Holiday Guests, Might Hang Around Too Long

Dec. 26, 2023 10:00 am ETThroughout 2023, there were a lot of tough headlines about commercial real estate: Vacant offices. Falling apartment rents. Fire-sale prices. So why did banks’ loans to that market grow this year?So-called CRE loans at banks are up over 3% over last year, versus a more than 1% decline in general commercial-and-industrial corporate lending, according to weekly Federal Reserve data through Dec. 6. CRE loans’ rise was just shy of the increase in loans to consumers. And within CRE, construction-and-land development lending was up over 9%, growing almost as much as credit-card loans.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
