Sunak tells Covid inquiry that describing Treasury as ‘pro-death squad’ was wrong – video | UK news

Rishi Sunak has rejected a characterisation of the Treasury under his chancellorship as a 'pro-death squad'. The expression was attributed to Boris Johnson in a diary entry by the chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, but Hugo Keith KC did not say the term was used by Johnson himself when he asked Sunak about it. Sunak told the inquiry: 'I do not think it is a fair characterisation'

COVID variant BA.2.86 triples in new CDC estimates, now 8.8% of cases

Nearly 1 in 10 new COVID-19 cases in the U.S. are from the BA.2.86 variant, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated Monday, nearly triple what the agency estimated the highly mutated variant's prevalence was two weeks ago. Among the handful of regions with enough specimens reported from testing laboratories, BA.2.86's prevalence is largest in the Northeast: 13.1% of cases in the New York and New Jersey region are blamed on the strain.Monday's figures mark the first time BA.2.86's prevalence has surged enough to be listed as a standalone variant on the CDC's estimates. Scientists first warned of the highly mutated strain's discovery over the summer.  "In previous Nowcast updates, BA.2.86 was too uncommon to be shown separately and was gr...

How to Get Free Weekly Credit Reports | Credit Cards

The three major U.S. credit reporting agencies – Equifax, Experian and TransUnion – have made their offer of free weekly credit reports to consumers permanent. The reports, available on AnnualCreditReport.com, are being made available to all Americans to "empower consumers to more regularly review their credit history and better understand their financial data," the companies announced in a statement. The free weekly reports began in April 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 crisis. The service was initially in place for a year, but it had been extended several times since then. Most recently, in September 2023, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion made the service permanent. Before the pandemic, you could get one free copy of your credit report every 12 months from each credit bureau. Chinese and American Hospitals Learn the Value of Germs

Here we go again. The World Health Organization on Nov. 22 said it is looking into media reports of Chinese hospitals overwhelmed by sick children. Chinese authorities attribute the surge to higher circulation of seasonal bugs like the flu and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. The reports have raised concerns about a potentially novel pathogen spreading in China and renewed suspicions about Beijing’s lack of transparency.“It is not at all clear when this outbreak started as it would be unusual for so many children to be affected so quickly,” the International Society for Infectious Diseases’ Program for Monitoring Emerging Diseases reported.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. The Federal Reserve left its target federal funds rate unchanged for the second consecutive time Wednesday.Even so, consumers likely will get no relief from current sky-high borrowing costs.Altogether, Fed officials have raised rates 11 times in a year and a half, pushing the key interest rate to a target range of 5.25% to 5.5%, the highest level in more than 22 years. "Relief for households isn't likely to come soon, at least not directly in the form of a cut in the fed funds rate," said Brett House, economics professor at Columbia Business School. The consensus among economists and central bankers is that interest rates will stay higher for longer, or until inflation moves closer to the central bank's 2% target rate. What the federal funds rate means for youThe federal funds rate, which i...

Yes, There’s a New Covid Variant. No, You Shouldn’t Panic

It’s scariant season—again.A new offshoot of Omicron, BA.2.86—nicknamed Pirola—has popped up in Israel, the US, South Africa, and the UK after it was first recorded in Denmark in late July. Pirola initially set off alarm bells because it was spotted in four countries at the same time—and because, having majorly curtailed our viral surveillance systems, we don’t know how long it’s been making the rounds. Plus, the sheer number of mutations it has was reason enough to be spooked—BA.2.86 boasts more than 30 new mutations, compared to the most recently dominant variant, XBB.1.5.“The only other time we’ve seen such a large genetic shift was the initial transition from Delta to Omicron, which led to the most hospitalizations and the most deaths of any surge in the pandemic,” says Dan Barouch, h...

Biden Jokes About Not Wearing A Mask After COVID Exposure

President Joe Biden joked about not wearing a mask while he delivered remarks at the White House on Wednesday, just a day after testing negative for COVID-19 following his wife’s confirmed infection. The president carried a black mask as he approached the lectern in the State Dining Room to talk about a new contract between unions and shipping companies at West Coast ports. But he didn’t put on the mask, which he acknowledged during his remarks after reiterating that he had tested negative for COVID-19.“Let me explain to the press: I’ve been tested again today. I’m clear across the board,” Biden said at the press conference while holding up the mask. “But they keep telling me, because this has to be 10 days or something, I’ve got to keep wearing it. But don’t tell them I didn’t have it on ...
