Surge of Migrants Heading North Has Chicago, New York at a ‘Breaking Point’

The mayors of New York, Chicago and Denver said a nonending flow of migrants arriving from the southern border has pushed their cities to the breaking point heading into the New Year, as border crossings swell and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott keeps finding new ways to torment his Democratic rivals.Abbott, a Republican who began sending migrants on buses to other states in spring 2022, doubled down on the strategy in recent weeks. He sent his first planeloads of migrants to Chicago and New York in part to flout regulations on where and when bus operators can drop off the migrants.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Insurrection Clause Is Self-Executing Until Congress Says Otherwise

In “Trump vs. the Banana Republic of Colorado” (op-ed, Dec. 21), Karl Rove uses the example of Lucius Q.C. Lamar, a man presumably disqualified from holding office by the 14th Amendment due to his service in the Confederacy. Mr. Rove points out, however, that Lamar was able to serve across the three branches of government, including on the Supreme Court, despite the 14th Amendment bar. If that were all there is to Justice Lamar’s story, it would be a persuasive point. But Mr. Rove left out important parts of the story. The 14th Amendment bars from public office those who engage in insurrection or rebellion, but it also says Congress can “remove such disability.” In 1872 Congress passed the Amnesty Act, and did just that for most Southerners. There was an important exception, however. Membe...

Chris Christie Reacts To Shocking Trump Colorado Supreme Court Ruling

On Tuesday, Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), one of the fiercest critics of Donald Trump in the Republican presidential primary race, reacted to a Colorado Supreme Court ruling that found the former president ineligible to run for the White House in 2024.In a shocking 4-3 decision, Colorado’s high court said Trump should be disqualified from the state’s primary presidential ballot under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which states that those who took an oath to uphold the U.S. Constitution but then “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against it or gave “aid or comfort to [its] enemies,” should be prevented from holding state or federal office.During a town hall event in New Hampshire, Christie said the ruling was “premature” and predicted there would be “a lot of anger in th...

Colorado Reconsiders Letting Trump on the Ballot

There is only one real conclusion to draw from the oral arguments before the Colorado Supreme Court last Wednesday, about whether Donald Trump is constitutionally disqualified from running for President again because of his role in the events of January 6th, and it’s that the U.S. Supreme Court needs to rule on that question as soon as possible. Otherwise, the country will be headed for even more electoral upheaval than it already faces. The Colorado litigation is one of several similar cases on the disqualification question, but it has proceeded the furthest. It won’t be the last.Trump, after all, is poised to be the Republican nominee. What if, on Super Tuesday, or at the G.O.P.’s Convention, or even on Election Day, there is still an unresolved legal controversy about his eligibility? ...

Former Apple Exec Lists Aspen Home for $45 Million

As Apple’s vice president of real estate, design, and construction for 13 years, Bob Bridger helped design the tech giant’s glassy, expansive stores. When he built a home in Aspen, Colo., after leaving Apple in 2015, he brought some of that sensibility to the contemporary estate, which has floor-to-ceiling windows and a “clubhouse” building with a glass garage door. Through Bridger’s relationships with vendors from his time at Apple, he connected with the owners of a quarry in Marble, Colo., and was able to handpick the stone in the house. After several years of construction, the property was completed in 2022, and Bridger is now putting it on the market for $45 million. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
