Broadcom’s Software Makeover Doesn’t Fully Mask Chip Swings

Broadcom Chief Executive Hock Tan isn’t someone who finds blowing money appetizing. But that $40,000 dinner seems to have gone down well. That was the reported cost for Tan to sit at the table of Chinese President Xi Jinping during a dinner at last month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in San Francisco. It is a notable sum for an executive known for running one of the most tightfisted chip companies in the business. Broadcom spends just 4% of its annual revenue on sales and marketing—compared with 11% on average by companies on the PHLX Semiconductor Index.  Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. A Tale of Two Hats

December makes me think of hats—well, one hat in particular. Not Napoleon’s bicorne hat, an original of which (just in time for Ridley Scott’s movie) sold for $2.1 million at an auction last month in France, but Santa’s hat.The two aren’t as different as you might imagine. They share the same origins and, improbably, tell a similar story. Both owe their existence to the invention of felt, a densely matted textile. The technique of felting was developed several thousand years ago by the nomads of Central Asia. Since felt stays waterproof and keeps its shape, it could be used to make tents, padding and clothes.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

In August, Nell Diamond, who runs the fashion and lifestyle brand Hill House Home, was in Montana on bridesmaid duty, getting ready for her best friend’s wedding reception. Peeking at her phone between hair and makeup, she found over 100 texts from her employees, and messages kept rolling in. “At first, I couldn’t figure out what we were freaking out about,” said Diamond, founder and CEO of the brand best known for its Nap Dress. Then she saw: Taylor Swift had worn a black matching set from Hill House to the rehearsal dinner of her frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff and actress Margaret Qualley, and paparazzi photos were swarming the internet. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
