Japan Airlines Downgraded Our First Class Seats and Skimped on the Refund

In late 2021, Mark from San Diego and his wife were flying home on British Airways premium economy from Split, Croatia, via London and Dallas, but missed a connection. They were rebooked in economy on Virgin Atlantic and tried for two years to get reimbursed when finally, in December 2023, they were told they had agreed to the downgrade, which he denies. (It shouldn’t matter anyway, both Mr. Leff and Mr. Radchenko said.)They finally received $746 from British Airways earlier this week. But the full cost of their original round-trip itinerary (two tickets from San Diego to Ljubljana, Slovenia, and back from Croatia) was $5,821, and it is unlikely that their refund could account for 75 percent of a premium economy trans-Atlantic flight. British Airways confirmed they calculated the differen...

“Saltburn” Is a “Brideshead” for the Incel Age

If the rich blithered as much in real life as they do in the movies, they’d have been eaten long ago. The fantasy that the privileged are easily gulled has a powerful lure. By placing riches in opposition to acumen, it reassures us that luxury and status are probably unearned—that, just as youth is said to be wasted on the young, wealth is wasted on the wealthy, and that it wouldn’t take much to get it into the right hands. That’s the premise of the British writer and director Emerald Fennell’s satire “Saltburn,” her second feature, which, for all the obviousness of its setup and its allocation of sympathy points, is diabolically clever. Yet the ingenuity of the story’s twists and turns ultimately left me feeling cheated, because of the cagy way that plot points are dispensed. It may seem...

South Korean flag carrier Korean Air will introduce a premium economy class product as it takes delivery of new Boeing 787 Dreamliners, the airline’s chief executive, Walter Cho, told media this week. The SkyTeam carrier already has 11 Boeing 787-9 long-haul aircraft in its current fleet, but is due to take delivery of nine more, plus 20 higher-capacity 787-10 Dreamliners over the coming years. In their current configuration, the Korean Air 787-9 Dreamliner seats 269 passengers – 24 in 1-2-1 business class and 245 in 3-3-3 economy class. A seat map for the 787-10 with the new premium economy seats has not been released yet, although Korean Air did say that the new cabin class would debut next year. Separately, on 9 November, Korean Air announced that it would resume its services to K...

Japan Airlines unveils new A350 business and first class suites – Business Traveller

Japan Airlines has unveiled the new seating products which will feature on the carrier’s 13 A350-1000s, the first of which is due for delivery later this year. The four-class aircraft will offer a total of six first class suites designed by Safran Seats (down from eight on JAL’s Boeing 777-300ERs). These will offer three different seating / sleeping choices – a wide sofa, a seat and single bed, or the option to convert the whole suite into a double bed – although note that one corner of the double bed option houses a storage / table unit so the bed doesn’t stretch to double size all the way down. When in sofa mode the seat will be 123cm wide, and the bed length is 203cm. The suites feature a sliding privacy door, with a wall reaching up to 157cm, as well as a wardrobe and storage space, ...

SWISS unveils new menu for long-haul first and business class customers – Business Traveller

SWISS has introduced a new menu for first and business class guests on long-haul services from Switzerland. The new menu is the latest chapter in the airline’s ‘Taste of Switzerland’ inflight dining programme, which sees an award-winning chef showcase regional specialties from their home canton accompanied by wines and cheeses from the region. Every three months a new chef is introduced, with the latest addition being Olivier Jean, the executive chef at the Oetker Collection’s The Woodward hotel in Geneva, an 26-suite hotel designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon. The menu has been inspired by the cuisine at the hotel’s Michelin-starred L’Atelier Robuchon restaurant, where he blends French haute cuisine with Asian influences and local specialties. In first class, passengers can enjoy the likes of...
