Normally we wouldn’t wish trial lawyers on our worst enemy. But as anti-Israel demonstrations grow increasingly lawless, the plaintiffs bar could help. Why not hit protesters who break the law and keep Americans from getting to their destination with a tort liability suit for false imprisonment?On Wednesday anti-Israel protesters blocked access to JFK and LAX airports in New York and Los Angeles, respectively. The laws of New York and California, like most states, recognize the tort. While there is no precedent applying this tort to road-blocking protesters, it fits the offense. The trial of jailed newspaperman Jimmy Lai begins Monday. He is formally accused of sedition, collusion with foreign forces and conspiracy to produce and distribute seditious material. But the real case the authorities are making is that Hong Kong people would never push for democracy if the 76-year-old Mr. Lai and outside forces hadn’t infected them with this foreign idea.On Wednesday China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning called Mr. Lai the “mastermind” of protests aimed at destabilizing Hong Kong. Well, that was predictable. On Nov. 30 the Maduro regime in Venezuela ignored the U.S. deadline to lay out a process to reinstate opposition candidates for a 2024 presidential election. Will the Biden Administration take it lying down? In return for that Maduro promise, made Oct. 17 with the democratic opposition, the Biden Administration eased sanctions for six months on the export of Venezuelan oil and new investment in the country.
