Virgin launches 50 per cent bonus promotion on Virgin Points purchases – Business Traveller

Virgin has launched a new points bonus promotion for those looking to purchase Virgin Points in the coming days. The offers runs until 18 September, up to the maximum 100,000 points purchase limit per Virgin Red or Virgin Atlantic Flying Club member. Virgin Points normally cost £15 per 1,000 points, meaning members can currently get 1,500 points for the same cost, valuing them at 1p per point. Earlier this month Virgin introduced a new flat rate for Virgin Red and Flying Club members looking to transfer points to family and friends. Members will now pay a flat rate of £10 per transfer, with no limit to the amounts of points which can be moved to another member. Global airline passenger traffic surpassed 95 per cent of pre-Covid levels in July – Business Traveller

The International Air Transport (IATA) has released its latest traffic figures, showing continued post-Covid recovery momentum during July. Global traffic (measured in revenue passenger kilometres or RPKs) reached 95.6 per cent of pre-Covid levels, with an increase in traffic of 26.2 per cent compared to July 2022. The figure is also up 7 per cent from the 88 per cent of pre-Covid levels achieved in March this year. Bhutan cuts Sustainable Development Fee by 50 per cent – Business Traveller

Bhutan has slashed its Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) tourist tax by 50 per cent for the next four years. As of 1 September, visitors will be required to pay US$100 per person, per night for the length of their trip (down from US$200 per person per night). The new rates will remain in effect until 31 August, 2027. The 50 per cent reduction will also be applied to children, meaning new SDF rates will be US$50 for those aged 6-12, while those under 6 will be free. The 24-hour SDF waiver for tourists staying in border towns will continue. Around 20 per cent of Travelodge hotels to feature budge-luxe design by year end – Business Traveller

Travelodge has published an update on the rollout of of its budget-luxe revamp, with a total of 55 properties set to benefit from the new design this year. Of these, 25 hotels have already been upgraded in time for the peak summer period, including properties in Cheltenham, Ipswich, Oxford, Newport and Southampton. The group’s two largest hotels have also been updated – the 463-room Travelodge London Covent Garden, and the 408-room Travelodge London Kings Cross Royal Scot. Melbourne airport now at 82 per cent of pre-pandemic passenger levels – Business Traveller

More than 30 million people passed through Melbourne airport in the 12 months to June 2023, as demand for air travel continues its trajectory towards pre-pandemic levels. A total of 30,783,366 people used the airport’s four terminals in the 2023 financial year, including more than 22.5 million domestic passengers and almost 8.3 million international travellers. The overall figure represents a 138 per cent increase on the previous financial year, and 82 per cent of the 37.4 million passengers processed in the 2019 financial year, the airport says. FIVE obtained 100 per cent renewable electricity for Dubai hotels in 2022 – Business Traveller

FIVE Hotels and Resorts has said that 100 per cent of its electricity used in 2022 at its two properties in Dubai – FIVE Palm Jumeirah and FIVE Jumeirah Village – was derived from solar energy. To that end, it says that it has become the only hotel operator in the UAE to obtain the International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC) confirming that it has achieved 100 per cent renewable electricity for 2022. These certificates were received from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is under the purview of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). FIVE’s single delivery I-REC agreement was subsequently verified through the International Renewable Energy Certification Foundation.
