The Buffalo AKG Art Museum Adds a Jewel to Its Setting

Buffalo, N.Y.There is no good way to add to a classical temple. You either sling your addition off to one side and accept the incongruity, or else you step away and build a second building that stands aloof. Gordon Bunshaft tried the first approach with his 1962 addition to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and now Shohei Shigematsu has chosen the second. His new pavilion, which contains nearly 30,000 square feet of exhibition space and which opened July 20, is set so far away that you must reach it over a 300-foot serpentine bridge. All this dramatically changes the character of the institution that has now been rechristened the Buffalo AKG Art Museum. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. A Labor Strike Over Shoplifting

Union walkouts these days are common for pay raises, but get this: Over the weekend hundreds of workers at three Macy’s stores in the Seattle suburbs went on strike to protest rampant shoplifting and risks to employee safety.United Food & Commercial Workers Local 3000 says Macy’s “is not doing enough to address shoplifting, violent shoppers, and other safety threats to workers and customers.” Among other evidence, the union points to an incident involving Liisa Luick, a longtime employee at the Macy’s store some 20 miles north of downtown. Updated Nov. 16, 2023 8:02 pm ETWASHINGTON—The House Ethics Committee said Thursday that it found substantial evidence that Rep. George Santos (R., N.Y.) stole money from his campaign and committed other misdeeds, igniting new calls for his immediate expulsion by colleagues and prompting the embattled lawmaker to say he won’t run for re-election. “Representative Santos sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit” and “blatantly stole from his campaign,” the committee’s report said. The committee said Santos’s conduct “warrants public condemnation, is beneath the dignity of the office, and has brought severe discredit upon the House.”Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. The West Should Welcome Gaza Refugees

By Danny Danon and Ram Ben-BarakHamas’s unprovoked terrorist attack on Oct. 7 has endangered not only Israel but the more than two million people who live in the Gaza Strip. Although Hamas won 2006 elections in Gaza and took control of the area from the Palestinian Authority the following year, the group has said that it bears no responsibility for the people living there. On Oct. 15, Hamas operatives stole food and medical supplies from humanitarian trucks. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency reported the theft in a tweet, which it later deleted. But U.N. sources confirmed the theft to Israel’s Walla News, and Israel’s military liaison to the Palestinians confirmed that fuel and medical supplies went to Hamas.
