Jordi Fernandez is Nets choice to be next head coach: reports

Sacramento Kings assistant Jordi Fernandez has emerged as the Nets’ preferred choice to replace Jacque Vaughn as head coach, according to reports. Fernandez, former Milwaukee Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer and Phoenix Suns associate head coach Kevin Young were considered to be among the candidates to fill Brooklyn’s vacancy. Kevin Ollie served as interim head coach over the Nets’ final 28 regular-season games after Vaughn was relieved of his duties in February. Brooklyn finished 32-50 in 2023-24 and missed the postseason in a rather weak Eastern Conference. Fernandez, 41, was viewed as one of the better assistant coaches in the NBA. The Barcelona, Spain native served on Mike Malone’s staff with the Denver Nuggets and Mike Brown’s staff in Sacramento. He was an assistant and a head coac...

6-year-old desperately tries to save mom from apparent overdose death in Brooklyn

A brave 6-year-old girl spent her Christmas Day trying to prevent tragedy by calling 911 to help her lifeless mom in Brooklyn — but the child’s best efforts couldn’t save the woman from what police believe was a fatal drug overdose. The child also desperately called her older sister, who rushed to the scene of their 46-year-old mother Rashedia Fitch’s apartment in the Kingsborough Houses in Crown Heights, a neighbor recounted. “The little girl was brave. She was the one who called 911,” said neighbor Mildred Perez, 76, who lives across the hall.  “Her little daughter, she’s OK. She was playful. She took care of her. She was very good. She was loved.” At the scene on Monday around noon, the 6-year-old’s older sister screamed and cried, “What happened to her?” as she tried to push through r...

April Bloomfield’s Quietly Triumphant Return

The partnership is canny: Bloomfield, for all her prodigious talent, has never been much for publicity; Stulman, although supremely gifted at creating dining rooms with good vibes, has never quite managed to get his restaurants famous for their food. At Sailor, he works the subtly nautical-themed space—maritime paintings, wooden built-ins, brass fittings—beaming his earthy charisma upon diners, pouring tastes of amaro, chatting amiably about how he had to open this place, in the former home of a takeaway Middle Eastern spot, now that he’s moved with his family to Brooklyn and wants to continue being able to walk to work. Perhaps to no one’s surprise, the partnership between him and Bloomfield has resulted in a restaurant that is intensely, almost freakishly wonderful, especially given tha...
