John Fetterman Plays Against Type

West Mifflin, Pa.It’s a warm December morning, and Sen. John Fetterman is walking along the Great Allegheny Passage across the Monongahela River from his home in Braddock. “I spend as much time as I can out here,” he says of the trail, which runs 150 miles from downtown Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Md.Copyright ©2024 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. The Welfare-Industrial Complex Is Booming

Dec. 31, 2023 11:23 am ETDrill into the nation’s 3.7% unemployment rate, and you’ll find a growing welfare-industrial complex beneath the seemingly strong labor market. Government, social assistance and healthcare account for 56% of the 2.8 million net new jobs over the past year, and for nearly all gains in blue states such as New York and Illinois. The tens of thousands of migrants pouring into big cities need to be tended to. So do the hundreds of thousands of drug-addled and mentally ill homeless living on the streets. Progressive government doesn’t do anything on the cheap. America’s welfare state has thus become a proverbial Big Dig, and it keeps getting bigger.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Can Washington Still Do Anything?

Can the United States government still act to solve problems and aid allies in the national interest? It’s hard to believe it has come to this, but that’s the underlying question as President Biden and Congress struggle to pass a spending bill to help Ukraine and Israel while improving U.S. border security. President Biden has asked Congress for $106 billion in supplemental spending, but he needs Republican votes to do it. Republicans want to do something to reduce the flood of migrants pouring across the border and burdening American cities, but they need Democratic votes to pass it. The necessity for compromise is obvious, but America’s polarized politics and Mr. Biden’s political weakness may tank the effort. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Hamas Attack Reminds Europeans of the Virtue of Sovereignty

Europe has discovered that it has an anti-Semitism crisis on its hands. And now some politicians claim to have found the answer: Deport the anti-Semites. It’s a response as illuminating as it is futile. The shock to Europe has been the “pro-Palestinian” protests on the streets in the weeks since Hamas’s barbaric invasion of Israel. Too often these degenerate into, if they don’t start out as, festivals of anti-Semitism and sympathy for Hamas. Germany and France have led the charge in attempting to ban such gatherings, with mixed success. In the U.K., the refusal of the authorities to do so has become deeply controversial. Border Crisis Invites Terrorists – WSJ

What does war in Gaza mean for U.S. homeland security? The sudden outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hamas creates three broad categories of risk for domestic counterterrorism officials. First among them is America’s porous southern border. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8
