Radisson Collection Berlin to reopen with centrepiece ‘Living Tree’ – Business Traveller

The Radisson Collection Hotel Berlin is set to reopen at the end of the year, and will feature a new showpiece installation in its lobby area. So how did we get to this point? The former Radisson Blu Hotel Berlin was reflagged under the group’s Radisson Collection brand in early 2022 following a 12-month renovation programme. The 427-room property retained its centrepiece AquaDom aquarium in the hotel’s lobby, which stood 25 metres tall and housed around 1,500 fish. But early on the morning of 16 December, 2022 the aquarium – which had held the Guinness World Record as the world’s largest cylindrical aquarium – suddenly burst, pouring around a million litres of water into the hotel and the street. The hotel has remained closed since, but in a LinkedIn post Yilmaz Yildirimlar, area senior...

Germany Faces the Green Fiscal Truth

Things have gone from bad to worse in Germany this week after a court ruling that’s forcing the government to do something truly shocking: level with voters about how much the net-zero energy transition will cost. Please pass the smelling salts. The country’s highest constitutional court ruled this month that one of the coalition government’s main gimmicks for funding green projects violates Germany’s version of a balanced-budged amendment. That amendment, known as the debt brake, caps the government’s fiscal deficit at 0.35% of gross domestic product per year except in emergencies (as defined by special legislation passed with a majority in the Bundestag).Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Berlin fourth grader uses birthday money to give back to troops – NBC Connecticut

A fourth grader at Emma Willard Elementary in Berlin is giving back in a special way. While most children save their money for a special game or toy, Jayce Panetta used his birthday savings to give to those who, he said, give to us every day. “It’s just the least that we could do because they’re out sacrificing their lives,” Panetta said. The whole idea started with a visit to a Boxes to Boots collection drive. Jayce said he went along with his grandmother and left inspired to be a part of it. “The first day I walked in there, they already had like 2,000 boxes in there wrapped up,” he explained. So, his grandmother reached out to Boxes to Boots president, Kristen Gauvin. Gauvin said it melted her heart to hear that someone so young wanted to be a part. She said the ...

Could the Air Berlin brand be resurrected? – Business Traveller

It’s been nearly six years since Air Berlin filed for bankruptcy and ceased operations, but news this week brings with it the possibility of the resurrection of the brand. Simpleflying.com reports that the trademark rights to the Air Berlin name have been purchased by Marcos Rossello, founder and CEO of German charter carrier Sundair. Sundair operates charter flights from German bases including Berlin Brandenburg, Bremen, Dresden and Kassel airports. Of course Air Berlin never had the opportunity to fly from Berlin Brandenburg – I attended a media event at the airport back in March 2012 ahead of what was meant to be the grand opening in June of that year, but a series of delays led to the airport eventually opening nearly a decade later, by which time Air Berlin had long since ceased ope...

Reports of a Lioness Near Berlin Prompt a Sprawling Search

The Berlin bear was given a run for its money as the official symbol of Germany’s capital on Thursday. The authorities said that a “free-roaming lioness” in the area had led to a sprawling search with more than 100 police officers, veterinarians and hunters as well as drones and helicopters involved in trying to catch the animal.“People are encouraged to stay at home if possible and not let their pets outside,” said a statement from the German municipality of Kleinmachnow, in the state of Brandenburg, where the first sighting of the animal was reported. Officials from the town of 20,000 people, about 14 miles from the center of Berlin, said the lioness had been “causing a stir” overnight since it was spotted eating a wild boar along the road. The animal had not been captured as of Thursday...
