U.S. is pushing China to change a policy threatening American jobs, Treasury Secretary Yellen says

The Biden administration is pushing China to change an industrial policy that poses a threat to U.S. jobs, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Monday after ending four days of talks with Chinese officials. She also said she and Chinese officials had "difficult conversations" about national security, including American concerns that Chinese companies are supporting Russia in its war in Ukraine. But the focus of her trip was industrial policy, and what the U.S. and Europe describe as manufacturing overcapacity in China. Wealthy nations fear a wave of low-priced Chinese exports that will overwhelm factories at home, undercutting prices from U.S. manufacturers and risking job losses. Still, Yellen also stressed that the U.S. is seeking "a healthy economic re...

Jimmy Lai and the Assault on Press Freedom

Jimmy Lai, one of the most vocal advocates for democracy and rule of law in China’s history, was sentenced to 69 months in prison on Dec. 10, 2022. His crime? It depends who you ask. Officially, his sentencing was for lease violations in connection with his newspaper, Apple Daily. He still awaits trial on charges of national-security law violations and conspiracy to print seditious publications. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Don’t Count on Economic Woes to Deter China

Nov. 28, 2023 12:54 pm ETDuring his September trip to Vietnam, President Biden dismissed a reporter who asked for his thoughts on the threat the Chinese Communist Party poses to Taiwan. “I think China has a difficult economic problem right now,” Mr. Biden said. “I don’t think it’s going to cause China to invade Taiwan. And matter of fact, the opposite—it probably doesn’t have the same capacity that it had before.”Mr. Biden’s response perhaps explains why his administration’s China policy has veered away from competition and toward accommodation. The hope is that Beijing’s economic woes will make it more conciliatory. But that assumption badly misunderstands the power-hungry nature of the Chinese Communist Party and the lessons of history.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All R...

WHO Presses China for Data on Wave of Undiagnosed Pneumonia Cases

Updated Nov. 23, 2023 8:19 pm ETThe World Health Organization said it has asked China to provide more information on an outbreak of pneumonia among children in northern parts of the country, an unusual public disclosure that revives questions about Beijing’s transparency on the spread of infectious diseases. In a statement issued Wednesday, the WHO cited reports about “clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in northern China,” which prompted the United Nations agency to ask Beijing for “additional epidemiologic and clinical information, as well as laboratory results” related to the infections. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Manchester airport announces daily Beijing flights from June 2024 – Business Traveller

Hainan Airlines will operate daily flights from Manchester airport to Beijing next summer. The direct service linking Manchester and China’s capital currently runs four times weekly, but will increase to daily service from June to September 2024. The flights will be operated by two-class Airbus A330 aircraft, departing at 1215 each day, with tickets already on sale. The airline’s partnership with Loganair also means that passengers from other UK regions can book tickets from Aberdeen, Inverness, the Isle of Man and Newquay to Beijing with an airside transfer at Manchester. Manchester became the first UK hub outside of London to gain a direct flight to mainland China when Hainan Airlines launched its service to Beijing in 2016. The route was suspended during the pandemic but relaunched in...

TikTok Asks Managers to Give More Staff Lower Review Grades

Oct. 29, 2023 11:36 am ETSINGAPORE—TikTok is asking managers across the world to give more employees lower ratings in performance reviews, a move that staff fear could reduce bonuses and lead to layoffs, people familiar with the matter said. In mid-October, managers were told by senior management and staff in human resources that they needed to assign more performance reviews at the lower end of the company’s bell-curve rating system, employees managing teams in the U.S., Singapore and China told The Wall Street Journal. This could double or triple the number of subpar grades given on some teams this year, the people said.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Meanwhile, Trouble in the Pacific

The U.S. is putting military assets into the Middle East to deter a larger war, but other parts of the world aren’t receding into calm. The latest sparks in the Pacific demand a real bipartisan effort to pour U.S. hard power west of the international dateline to deter a provocation from China.Over the weekend in the South China Sea, a Chinese coast guard vessel collided with a Philippine boat that was attempting to resupply military personnel on the Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands. Beijing regularly harasses Philippine vessels as it tries to exert control over the islands. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. All Rights Reserved. 87990cbe856818d5eddac44c7b1cdeb8

Chinese Companies and Your Tax Dollars

It isn’t easy luring corporations to Illinois these days, so Gov. J.B. Pritzker celebrated when the state landed a big electric-vehicle battery plant in September. The real winner, however, is Gotion, the Chinese company that is collecting taxpayer financing to subsidize its EV manufacturing. Mr. Pritzker boasted that the new $2 billion factory would bring 2,600 green jobs to the Land of Lincoln and represents “the most significant new manufacturing investment in Illinois in decades.” The company’s decision was helped by a $536 million Illinois subsidy package, including $213 million in tax benefits, a 30-year property tax freeze and $125 million from the state-lending program Invest in Illinois.
