76ers’ Daryl Morey mixes basketball with shot at Broadway in absurdist musical ‘Small Ball’

PHILADELPHIA -- Off Broadway and right off Broad Street, Daryl Morey composed an offbeat kind of basketball roster. Bird, Magic, even Phil Jackson made the cut, only in Morey’s world they are 6-inch Lilliputians, rather than giants in NBA history.Yes, the team is even led by Michael Jordan.Just not THAT Michael Jordan, a running gag in an absurdist musical comedy orchestrated in large part by Morey. The team president of the Philadelphia 76ers, Morey grew up considering a career in musical theater. Maybe write some Broadway smash hits. He even sketched out a draft for a basketball-themed musical — an idea hatched years ago when he connected with a theater company in Houston.“That theater I was working with approached me and said, ‘hey, wouldn’t it be cool to do a musical?’” Morey said. “Y...

‘I didn’t intend to hit him’: Green defends punching Nurkić in NBA game – video | Sport

NBA bad boy Draymond Green was ejected after hitting Jusuf Nurkić in the face during the Warriors' game against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday. It has been less than a month since Green was suspended for five games by the league for putting Minnesota’s Rudy Gobert in a headlock during an altercation in November. Green and Nurkić were battling in the third quarter when the Warriors' player appeared to slightly lose his balance before inexplicably wheeling around and smacking Nurkić in the face. Nurkić immediately crumpled to the ground but eventually got up and continued the game. The referees reviewed the play before calling Green for a flagrant 2 foul, which causes an automatic ejection.

The NBA Tournament’s Burning Question: Is It Worth a Parade?

In the first year of the NBA’s In-Season Tournament, basketball fans have become used to a few new things: purple courts, weird scheduling, the concept of a group stage. But they’re still wrapping their minds around how much they should really care about this whole competition. Now, as the inaugural event moves into the quarterfinals and gets ready for this week’s Final Four in Las Vegas, officials at eight city halls across the country are beginning to wonder the same thing. The question that at least one of them will have to answer: Is winning the in-season tournament worth a parade? Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Zero Points, One Headlock, Three Ejections, 103 Seconds: The NBA’s Hectic, Historic Night

A game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors had barely begun, Tuesday night in San Francisco, when the rowdiest scene of the early NBA season unfolded.Just over a minute and a half into the contest, Minnesota’s Jaden McDaniels and Golden State’s Klay Thompson, who had tussled for rebounding position, gripped and tore at one another’s jerseys at midcourt, spinning in circles as referees’ whistles blew. When Rudy Gobert, the Timberwolves’ 7-foot-1 center, tried to pry them apart, Draymond Green—the Warriors’ ace defender and agitator—leapt onto Gobert’s back and clamped an arm around his neck.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. He’s 90 Years Old. He’s Seen Everything In the NBA—Except This.

A “once in a lifetime” player? Hubie Brown has seen a few. Brown has dedicated most of his 90 years to basketball: playing in college and a peripheral pro league, filling up whiteboards at every level of coaching, rhapsodizing over post-ups and pick-and-rolls as an announcer.“I think of Bill Russell, I think of [Hakeem] Olajuwon, Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar],” Brown said in a recent interview, and continued a partial list of the giants who lived up to gigantic expectations: Wilt Chamberlain, Moses Malone, Shaquille O’Neal.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
