Heathrow unveils plans for new baggage system at Terminal 2 – Business Traveller

Heathrow has announced plans to build a new dedicated baggage system at its Terminal 2. The terminal currently uses a 30-year-old system housed within the airport’s Terminal 1, which closed to passengers in 2015 after 47 years of operation. BEUMER Group has been appointed to deliver the six-year project, with the new system capable of handling 31,000 bags per day when complete. Heathrow also said that “new technology with greater data analytics means the upgrade will deliver the predictable and reliable service customers need”. The dedicated T2 baggage system will allow Heathrow to demolish what remains of T1, which will in turn enable the airport to move forward with what it is calling its “new vision for the ‘heart of Heathrow’”. Long term plans will see more capacity added at T2 (also...

Munich airport trials smart baggage trolleys – Business Traveller

Munich airport has launched a trial of new baggage trolley technology at its Terminal 2. The smart baggage trolleys feature a tablet through which passengers can scan their boarding pass to receive flight information and updates in real time. In addition to details of their boarding gate, passengers can also select facilities including shops and restaurants, with the tablet then guiding them through the airport and highlighting offers based on their location. The six-month trial is being conducted in partnership with Danish developer Intelligent Track Systems (ITS), with the trolleys available for hire free of charge after security in Terminal 2. This summer British Airways launched a trial of new digital wayfinding maps at its Heathrow T3 and T5 hubs, with information on arrival and dep...

Virgin Australia launches baggage tracking tool – Business Traveller

Virgin Australia has rolled out a baggage tracking tool, enabling passengers to track the status of their checked baggage via the airline’s app. The carrier launched a pilot of the programme in May 2023, and this week has rolled it out across more than two thirds of its domestic network. The tracking tool is available on most domestic routes between major airports, including Sydney-Melbourne, Brisbane-Sydney, Melbourne-Gold Coast, Melbourne-Hobart, Adelaide-Melbourne and Sydney-Sunshine Coast among others. To access the tool, passengers must download the Virgin Australia app and enable push notifications via app settings. Once enabled, notifications will be sent to the guest’s phone throughout the journey, including upon the bag being checked-in, transferred to an international partner a...

SkyTeam launches hand baggage compliance checker for connecting customers – Business Traveller

SkyTeam has launched a new tool enabling customers to check the hand baggage allowance when travelling on more than one member carrier on one itinerary. Passengers can use the Carry-on Calculator to input their class of travel and the airlines they are flying with, to receive information on the hand baggage policies for each carrier. A recommended allowance is also advised based on the most restrictive carry-on and personal item allowance for every flight, including bag dimensions and maximum weight, to ensure the customer complies with requirements across all stages of the journey. The new online service is available at skyteam.com/en/hand-luggage-policy. Virgin Atlantic became SkyTeam’s latest member earlier this year, joining Aerolineas Argentinas, Aeromexico, Air Europa, Air France, ...
