Western Anxiety About Chinese EVs Could Prove Self-Defeating

Updated Jan. 1, 2024 12:06 am ETChina hawks have the upper hand in the political battle over electric vehicles. They should be wary of overplaying it.The rules for getting a tax credit on EV purchases in the U.S. changed recently. One difference will help stimulate sales: The credit, worth up to $7,500, is now available at the point of sale rather than at the end of the tax year, meaning it can be used as part of a down payment. Other changes will have the opposite effect. Among new sourcing requirements designed to foster a North American supply chain, battery components manufactured in China, the world’s largest supplier, now make models ineligible.Copyright ©2024 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Electric Scooter IPO to Test Enthusiasm for India’s EV Story

An initial public offering planned for next year in India could be a crucial test for the country’s budding electric-vehicle market. India’s Ola Electric, which makes two-wheeled electric scooters, filed in late December a draft prospectus for a public listing, seeking to raise about $662 million. It will become the first EV maker to list in India and will probably draw significant interest from investors. The Softbank-backed firm plans to use proceeds from the offering mainly for the expansion of its battery cell manufacturing facility in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. However, VW has yet to produce an EV that has matched the success of its historic gas-powered models such as the Beetle and the Golf in its core markets. Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Updated Dec. 30, 2023 12:11 am ETListen to article(2 minutes)MBOMBELA, South Africa—A half-century-old company on the outskirts of South Africa’s Kruger National Park has found itself in a fortuitous spot as Western automakers push to move their electric-vehicle supply chains away from China.Manganese Metal Co., based in the sleepy town of Mbombela, is the largest of just a handful of refiners of battery-grade manganese located outside China. Used mostly for making steel, manganese is increasingly replacing more expensive and harder-to-source minerals such as cobalt and nickel in the lithium-ion batteries that power electric cars, smartphones and laptops.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc. Tesla’s Self-Driving Tech Has Competition

Dec. 16, 2023 10:00 am ETA mass recall of Tesla’s Autopilot feature and crisis at General Motors’ autonomous-taxi business might give the impression that self-driving cars have hit a roadblock. In fact, the technology is on the cusp of much wider adoption. Just don’t expect it to change your life immediately—or the economics of making cars.On Wednesday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recalled more than two million Teslas equipped with Autopilot, which steers them automatically and matches their speed to surrounding traffic. But the news wasn’t as bad as the number makes it sound, either for Tesla’s profit or for its driver-assistance technology.Copyright ©2023 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
