IHG opens voco property close to New York’s LaGuardia airport – Business Traveller

IHG Hotels and Resorts has opened its fourth voco property in the New York area, with the unveiling of voco Fiorello – LaGuardia East. The 114-room hotel is located in Flushing, close to Chinatown, Citi Field and the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, and around ten minutes’ drive from LaGuardia airport. The property is named after Fiorello La Guardia, who served as the 99th Mayor of New York between 1934 and 1946. Features include an aviation-inspired design scheme, rooftop restaurant concept Little Flower’s Lookout for classic American-style breakfast and views of the Hudson River and Manhattan Skyline, and the soon-to-open Achille’s Lounge in the lobby area. Birmingham airport to install 12,800 solar panels – Business Traveller

Birmingham airport (BHX) has announced plans to install thousands of solar panels, to help it reach its target of net zero operations by 2033. A total of 12,804 photovoltaic panels will be installed on the ‘Alpha Bund’ – a 1.5km-long, six metre-high noise-blocking embankment flanking the northeastern edge of the runway beside the West Coast main line railway. The work will take place between September 2023 and May 2024, by which time the 6.8-megawatt configuration will provide at least 20 per cent of the airport’s on-site electrical power. Ryanair has introduced a new twilight bag drop service for its customers taking early flights from Manchester airport. Passengers flying before 0800 can now drop off their bags at the airport between 1900 and 2200 the evening before their flight. The service is free of charge, with customers advised to proceed to the carrier’s check-in desks at Manchester airport’s Terminal 3 as normal, and follow the signage for the ‘Twilight Bag Drop’. F&B operator SSP Group has unveiled plans for a new upmarket eatery at London City airport. Dublin airport recorded its busiest every day last weekend, with a total of 120,585 passengers travelling through the hub on Sunday 30 July. The airport also reported passenger figures of over 3.4 million for the month of July, which it said was 13 per cent higher than the same period in 2022, and “on a par with July 2019”. The total includes 205,000 transfer and transit passengers. EasyJet and Jet2 add twilight bag drop at Glasgow airport – Business Traveller

Glasgow airport has introduced a new Twilight Bag Drop service, available to easyJet and Jet2 customers. The airport says that passengers flying from the airport before 0830 can now check in their luggage between 1630 and 2100 the day before, allowing them to head straight for security on the morning of their flight. Note that a separate press release from easyJet says that the Glasgow twilight service opens at 1600. To avail of the service customers must complete check-in and have their boarding pass and passports with them. The lead booker must also be present when the luggage is being checked in. More than 30 million people passed through Melbourne airport in the 12 months to June 2023, as demand for air travel continues its trajectory towards pre-pandemic levels. A total of 30,783,366 people used the airport’s four terminals in the 2023 financial year, including more than 22.5 million domestic passengers and almost 8.3 million international travellers. The overall figure represents a 138 per cent increase on the previous financial year, and 82 per cent of the 37.4 million passengers processed in the 2019 financial year, the airport says.
