Munich airport brings forward net zero target by 15 years – Business Traveller

Munich airport has announced a target of reaching net zero by 2035, 15 years earlier than previously planned. The target involves reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions (ie: those the airport can directly influence) by a minimum of 90 per cent. The remaining 10 per cent of emissions will be removed from the atmosphere through measures including turning a commercial forest into a ‘climate forest’, enabling “carbon dioxide to be removed from the atmosphere and subsequently captured for the long term when the timber is used in construction or furniture”. The airport said measures were planned in four areas: Energy supply – including the use of renewable natural gas (biomethane) for its in-house cogeneration plant, the expansion of photovoltaics, the purchase of electricity from renewable sources...

Industry bodies disagree over air fare and airport charge increases – Business Traveller

ACI EUROPE has published a rebuttal of recent claims by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) showing that travellers in Europe are benefiting from air fare increases that are undercutting inflation. The European airport trade body said that while IATA states air fares only increased by +16 per cent as of June this year compared to 2019, “independent and authoritative data from RDC shows such increase actually standing at +38 per cent over the peak Summer months (Q3) – nearly two times the increase in the average consumer prices index (+20.8 per cent)”. ACI EUROPE also said that “IATA’s assertion that airport charges have been continuously increasing above inflation also does not stand scrutiny”. The body said that this assertion relies on “flawed data” from just two airport...

Manchester airport surpasses pre-pandemic passenger figures – Business Traveller

Manchester airport has reached an important milestone, with its passenger numbers overtaking pre-pandemic levels for the first time in October. The airport served 2.6 million passengers last month, which is equivalent to 105 per cent of 2019 levels. Passenger levels were also up 14 per cent on October 2022 and brought the airport’s rolling 12-month total to 27.6 million passengers. The airport said that demand had been driven by flights to destinations such as Dubai and an increase in city breaks to places including Amsterdam, Dublin and Paris. Manchester airport managing director Chris Woodroofe commented: “I’m really pleased to see passenger numbers recover beyond their pre-pandemic levels. But what’s even more important to me is the fact that we’re delivering a great service to all th...

Amsterdam Schiphol raising airport charges by nearly 15 per cent – Business Traveller

Amsterdam Schiphol has announced plans to raise its airport charges for 2024 by more than previously expected, “due to lost income in 2022”. Charges will increase by 14.8 per cent next year, rather than the previously expected 12 per cent. The airport said that the move was a result of lost revenue during the pandemic, with remaining travel restrictions at the start of 2022 leading to fewer flights. Schiphol stressed that legislation meant it was not permitted to make any profit from airport charges, with monies received being spent on facilities and services used by airlines, including runway maintenance, security, maintenance in the terminal and cleaning. The airport also said that where reduced flight numbers last year were a result of security staff shortages, it had not included the...

Stansted airport gets go-ahead for terminal extension – Business Traveller

London Stansted airport has been given the green light to extend its existing terminal building. The project was unveiled this summer, and has now been granted planning permission by the Planning Inspectorate. It follows the shelving of plans for a separate Arrivals Halls at the airport in 2019. A three-bay extension will now be built at the back of the existing terminal building, adding 16,500 sqm of capacity. The scheme will create a more spacious departure lounge, with more seating, shops, bars and restaurants, as well as additional check-in desks, increased baggage capacity and a larger security hall with more lanes. The project is one of several investment plans recently unveiled at UK airports, including the construction of a £50 million security screening hall at Birmingham airpor...
